Our home

Our home is a large four bedroom, three and a half bathroom family home, with a separate guest cottage. It sits on an acre of land in the heart of silicon valley, on the Stanford campus. We have completely remodeled the inside of the house, and are still working on the landscaping. (Hopefully landscaping will be complete by the time of the exchange.)

The main room on the first floor is very large and has a 25 foot high ceiling, with exposed wood beams. The first floor also has a spacious family room, and a remodeled kitchen with two ovens, a large island, a dishwasher, and a large refrigerator with freezer. All the appliances are top of the line. There is also a bathroom near the front door. The master bedroom is on the first floor, complete with a bathroom with two sinks and a steam shower, two walk-in closets and laundry.

The second floor has three children's bedrooms and two full bathrooms. We have bunk beds in the largest bedroom, and a trundle bed under the bunk bed that can sleep one additional person. There is also a loft area in the attic that is appropriate as a children's play area or sleeping area.

The house has two office areas, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. There are two fireplaces, one in the great room and one in the master bedroom. In addition, there is a computer in the kitchen, at a desk area.

Our home also has a two car garage, high speed fiber internet installed by Google, cable television, multiple televisions, and players for both video cassettes and DVDs. We have two indoor laundry areas, with washer, dryer, iron and steamer. We have 3 cars available for visitors, including a minivan.

The land, which is a bit more than 1 acre, is one of the great features of our home. The family room opens to a large and shady yard, which includes a patio table that seats 6 people, and a paved basketball court. The yard has many mature trees and offers solitude and seclusion.

The home also features a recently remodeled guest cottage, complete with a full bathroom.

Who we are

  1. My wife (Jennifer Eberhardt) and I are both professors at Stanford University. She teaches in the Psychology Department and I teach in the Law School. We have taught at Stanford since 1998. We are in our 40s and have three children, boys ages 8, 10 and 13. Most of our time is spent either at work or with our children. Our life and home is very child oriented. Our boys are each very different. One is cerebral, another is sports oriented, and the third is really, really funny. We like to go camping with the children and to take part in any of the many outdoor activities available in our area, during the summer especially--activities such as free outdoor concerts, street fairs, hiking, going to the beach and so forth.

Although we love pets, we do not have any, because some family members are allergic to dogs and cats. Also, we do not smoke, and would not want anyone to smoke in our home. Our children are well behaved, and we'd take great care of your home.

Your neighbourhood

Our home is on the campus of Stanford University in the city Palo Alto, in Silicon Valley. The Stanford campus is very active during the summer and offers lots of opportunities to hear live music and to interact with people from throughout the world. There are many summer programs on campus for all ages of children.

The area offers both indoor and outdoor activities and is great for children and adults alike, especially during the summer, when there are many free concerts and festivals in the area. Palo Alto is the heart of Silicon Valley and is home to very many fine restaurants and stores of all types.

Not only is Stanford a top university, the campus is one of the most beautiful in the world, and is ideal for biking, hiking and any sort of outdoor activities. (We have 5 bikes that would be available for use, and bikes are also available for rental locally.) The Silicon Valley area is home to many technology companies, including Facebook, Google, Apple and too many more to list.

From our home, one can easily drive to San Francisco (40 minutes), which is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Although sophisticated and offering great restaurants and night life, the city is also inviting for children.

Across the San Francisco Bay (50 minutes from our home) are Oakland/Berkeley, two cities that are very eclectic and charming. Just north of San Francisco (1 hour from our house) is the Marin area, where many wineries are located.

Also easily accessible from our home is the ocean (45 minutes), and the Monterey Peninsula (2 1/2 hours), where one can visit the beautiful city of Carmel or the rugged coast of Big Sur. Lake Tahoe is approximately 4 hours away by car. Los Angeles is 6 hours away.

These are extraordinarily beautiful areas, each with something different to offer. Whether one likes the nightlife of the city, or the serenity of rustic, wooded areas, the area in which we live can meet the need.

The weather is temperate year round. Most days between April and October are sunny and warm, but not too hot.

Our neighborhood is quiet and suburban. It consists of all single family residences. The homes are generally large. We know our neighbors and they are very nice and helpful.
