Our home

Our "cabin" in the woods on the banks of the Metolius River at Camp Sherman Oregon is a warm, comfortable retreat from the busy world with all the conveniences of home, except TV (DVD player available). An architect-designed remodel including new kitchen, second bathroom and loft area were added in 2005 to provide more living space and better views of the wild and scenic Metolius River, famous for its catch and release fly fishing. The house has a master suite with queen-sized bed and bathroom. Upstairs in the loft bedroom is a king-sized bed, a queen sized sofa sleeper and desk with fax/scanner/ printer for those who must stay connected with the real world. In the sunroom below is another queen sized sleeper sofa. There is a wood fireplace in the living room and a gas Jotel stove in the sunroom. The 2nd bath is directly off the entrance and the kitchen area is open with an island prep area. The granite counter tops and Jenn Air range along with Weber barbecue, microwave, dishwasher and other small appliances make meal preparation fun and easy for the family cook(s). There is also a breakfast bar so everyone can join in the fun!
The deck overlooking the river is where we begin our summer mornings with coffee in hand. On many summer days breakfast is followed by a walk along the river with lunch back on the deck and a good book in a lounge chair by the river for the afternoon. Dinner can be out on the deck or at the gourmet restaurant a mile up the road.

Who we are

  1. Dave and Ginger are semi-retired with a fairly flexible schedule. We have two grown sons who live in Portland where our primary residence is. We relish our time at our cabin on the Metolius River in Central Oregon but also enjoy travels abroad We have travelled quite a bit in Europe and look forward to going to Australia one of these days as well as back to Italy in spring of 2015. We are also open to doing a simultaneous exhange (long term?) for our Portland home,

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our cabin is one of about 100 originally built back in the 1930s nestled under the ponderosa and lodgepole pine about 2 miles down from where the Metolius River bubbles crystal clear out of a mossy hillside. You can walk up the river trail to the headwaters and catch a view of Mt. Jefferson's snow covered slopes along the way. Just to smell the pine-scented air is enough for many visitors here but for those who want a more active experience there is flyfishing (any time of year because it's catch and release only), hiking, mountain biking, river rafting and wildlife viewing right along the river. Not far away are world-class golf courses, tennis, mountain climbing and water skiing in the summer and fabulous snow skiing in the winter. The hub of the small community of Camp Sherman (pop. 250) which is a mile up the river from the cabin is the 90 year old Store and Fly Shop where you can get everything from your morning latte to a mountain bike rental and the latest advice on which flys are hatching on the river. For those who want to explore the local culture, the town of Sisters (pop. 1700), 15 miles from the cabin, has 1880's turn-of-the-century storefronts complete with an annual rodeo(in June) and a world-famous outdoor quilt show(in July) along with numerous concerts, art exhibits, shopping and great food all year long. (www.sisterscountry.com) For those who want the "big city" experience, the high desert city of Bend (metro area pop. 175,000) situated on the Deschutes River, is about 45 miles from the cabin. A short distance beyond Bend is Mt. Bachelor (snow skiing par exellence)and the Cascade Lakes Highway. Central Oregon has so many places to go, beautiful scenery to view and activities to do we can't list them all. Most of all you will relish the special retreat we call our 'House on the Metolius'.
