Our home

Our home is a Tuscan-style home on a quiet street about five blocks from the beach. It has 3 stories, with a dining/living/kitchen area downstairs, three bedrooms and two baths upstairs, and a finished "attic" where our oldest daughters have lived. Comfortable, with a backyard with a hot tub, and landscaping, and a central courtyard with fruit trees and a fountain. Off-street parking is generally available.

The home is functional and family-oriented. There's no cable TV or satellite dish, but there is a DVD player, a nice TV, and high speed Wifi. (Netflix is available on the TV for those who want to watch movies or re-runs.) The neighborhood is quiet, and we don't lock our doors or worry about theft. We'd consider sharing our car (Honda) and certainly our bikes (several), but most of what you want to do is able to be done on foot.

Who we are

  1. Susan and I have raised (mostly) five daughters, all of whom have left the nest and are either in graduate school or starting families. We, therefore, have the opportunity to travel, and our favorite places are Europe, Australia/NZ, and SE Asia. We've lived in Santa Cruz for about 35 years, and in this neighborhood for the entire time. We have traveled to many parts of the world, and believe that our area, and the climate, are very hard to beat.

Susan is a neonatal nurse at the nearby hospital, and I am retired from West Marine. I have been involved in the recreational marine industry for a long time, and now serve on a variety of boards that are involved with boating and boating safety. Susan volunteers as a surgical recovery nurse for Operational Smile and has made about 25 trips to the developing world to do surgeries on babies with cleft lips and cleft palates.

We have several properties that are available for exchange. Our primary house has 4 bedrooms, two cats, and it's very comfortable. We have an apartment onsite which is one-bedroom, accommodates three adults, and it extremely popular on Airbnb (but this would be an exchange, no Airbnb...) Finally, we have a beach house in Rio del Mar that might be available at specific times.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The home is located in the Seabright neighborhood of Santa Cruz. This area has warm days, and the fog during the summer generally goes away by 10:00 or so. There is a local brewery, climbing wall, pizza restaurants, market, and breakfast place. All are very good to excellent. Within 15 minutes you can walk to the Santa Cruz Harbor, Seabright Beach, or the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

Santa Cruz is known for many tourist attractions (and not in a bad way). The coast redwoods grow literally down to the ocean. The mountain biking is wonderful, the hiking is excellent, and the ocean wildlife is among the best in the world (google Monterey Bay Aquarium, MBARI, or Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to verify this claim.) The beaches are free, broad, and the water is (mostly) safe with excellent surfing (google Steamer Lane). San Francisco is 80 minutes away, and Monterey is 45 minutes away. Silicon Valley is 40 minutes inland.
