Our home

Our second home is a warm and comfortable cabin on the banks of the world famous Salmon River located between the towns of Salmon and Challis in Idaho.

The log construction of the cabin provides a sense of living in the past, while the gourmet kitchen and modern conveniences make life very easy. The living room and kitchen are very open and provide unobstructed views of the mountains and the river. Bedroom and bathroom with custom doors, walls and ceilings in white pine, and new hickory hardwood floors. Full dimension and tight natural log construction in living area provides a genuine rustic feel. A log staircase ascends to a very roomy loft with 2 beds and lots of storage space. The master bedroom is furnished with an ornate natural pine bedstead.

The kitchen is fully furnished with a 5 burner gas range, refrigerator, convection oven, microwave, dishwasher and disposal. Of course it is fully equipped with cooking equipment, utensils and dishes.
Enjoy the covered open decks on both the front and back of the cabin. The back deck has a screened-in porch area, with a hide a bed, wonderful for summer sleeping. We also have outside lounging and dining furniture. The outside features mature landscaping, perennial flowers and bushes, numerous varieties of trees, underground automated sprinkler and drip systems, and is fully fenced. There is a large deer fenced garden and flower area with raised beds. A bonus in the garden area is a small bunk house with bunk-beds, perfect for guests or a fun playhouse and camp out area for the younger ones.

Who we are

  1. Marge and I (Warren) are recently retired and live in Boise, Idaho, USA. Marge was a Para-legal with Hewlett Packard and I was employed as an Environmental Engineer with a governmental agency. We like to bike, hike and fish. Relaxation activities include reading and board games. We own and manage several rental properties here in Boise and we are very neat and tidy and would take very good care of your home. We have 3 college educated married daughters and they have given us 6 grandchildren in the last few years. We have only done 2 exchanges (2005) because we have been quite busy welcoming our grandchildren into our family!

The Salmon River is the same river that the expedition headed by Lewis and Clark in 1805 struggled with in their epic journey to the Pacific. From their efforts came the lower river’s name as the “River of No Return”. The upper section of the river, flowing by our cabin is actually quite tame as we frequently swim in it and float it in inner tubes or our pontoon boats.

You can relax on the back decks and enjoy watching the river roll by, the herons stalking small fish and osprey and eagles diving into the river at full speed to emerge with their catch for their offspring. Canada geese, ducks, and mergansers are amusing entertainers for your viewing pleasure from the large yard and decks. Mule deer frequent the area, munching on fallen apples from a beautiful, mature red delicious apple tree. Elk are not as often visible, but they are in the area. Hungarian Partridge and Chukars parade their young in the yard. Enjoy beautiful views of amazing mountains and colorful rock formations across the river.

About a mile downstream, a parking area at a trailhead, allows access to the Goldbug Hot Springs. It’s about a 1 ½ mile scenic walk up to a granite outcropping from which the hot spring emerges for your bathing comfort.
The City of Salmon, 23 miles downstream, is a laid back small and rustic town that boasts several nice restaurants, a brewery, a city swimming pool and a golf course. Here you can book river tours and guides for fishing and hunting. A couple of miles outside of Salmon is the Sacajawea Interpretive Center that pays tribute to the young Indian girl, born in Salmon, who served as a key guide to the Lewis and Clark journey in 1805.
Driving upstream along the Salmon River takes you through Challis, where there are more hot springs, and somewhat further along is the Bayhorse Ghost Town. Continuing up river, the canyon opens up into the Sawtooth National Recreation Area with stunning views of the jagged, alpine Sawtooth mountain range. At the base of the range, the quaint rustic town of Stanley lies, where you can select from multiple guide services for floating or fishing experiences. Nearby are 3 beautiful lakes and campgrounds.
Yellowstone National Park is within a 4 ½ hour drive from our cabin. The world famous Sun Valley resort is 2 ½ hours away.
