“Very late but still I am writing a recommendation for our fantastic home exchange back in 2010! We very much enjoyed our stay at Pattie and Doug's house, it was then our first home exchange and they both made our stay a really nice experience. Their house is very well located in a very nice suburban area of Portland from where you can explore the city itself but also the surrounding area. The house is extremely pretty and offers plenty of room, even for a larger family. We can highly recommend Pattie and Doug as experienced home exchangers with a great house!”

Our home
Spacious, charming 1920's era house, located in a close-in, historic neighborhood of Portland.
We live in a quiet residential area, with parks, swimming pools, shops, cafes and restaurants within walking distance. Our house is only 5-10 minutes by car (20+ minutes) by bus from downtown Portland.
Our house is furnished with many family antiques, which are in keeping with the feel of the home. We completely renovated/updated our kitchen with granite countertops and new appliances. The kitchen includes a lovely eat-in area, and it opens onto a private back garden and terrace, complete with gas grill (BBQ), table & chairs, and a brand new hot tub spa.
We also have a formal dining room that seats up to 12 comfortably, a living room (lounge) with a gas fireplace, and an adjoining office and sun porch. If you're musically inclined we have a piano, which sounds lovely on the hardwood floors.
The master bedroom suite has a queen bed and an en-suite WC with shower, two walk-in closets, and a sitting area with television equipped with cable/DVD. Each of the two children's bedrooms have single beds, and plenty of toys and books. The lower level has an enormous queen guest bedroom, W.C. with shower, and spacious family/play room with ping pong table and large screen television with cable/DVD. A detached garage offers bicycles, camping gear, etc., for your use while you stay. We have wireless high-speed Internet throughout the house.

Who we are
-
We are a family of four: Doug, is a physician; Pattie is a marketing and public relations consultant. We have two boys, aged 10 and 12 years old, and a wonderful dog (who will not be part of the exchange!). We have had wonderful experiences with our six home exchanges thus far: two in Spain (2008), and one each in Italy (2009), Washington, DC and Vienna (2010), and London (2013). We also lived in New Zealand for nearly 2 years (2011-12).
We all love traveling, hiking & exploring, good food & wine, and Doug is an avid cyclist (bicycle).

Where is it?
Your neighbourhood
Portland offers the best of both worlds: A vibrant, walkable urban hub with world-class restaurants, cafes, shopping, wine bars, active nightlife and a thriving music scene, parks, museums and galleries, etc. In addition to downtown and its trendy neighbor "The Pearl" neighborhood, Portland offers a wide variety of fantastic neighborhoods to explore, many of which are walkable from our house (Alberta, Broadway, Hollywood, etc.). Public transportation in the city is excellent.
Portland also makes an ideal base for exploring the renowned Pacific Northwest of the US, including the Columbia River Gorge (30-45 minutes); Oregon's famous Pacific coast beaches; world-class vineyards in surrounding wine country; Mt. Hood (year-round skiing and hiking) and Mt. Saint Helens (active volcano); Columbia, Clackamas and many other rivers (boating, skiing, fishing).
From Portland it's an easy trip to Seattle (3 hours), Vancouver (5 hours) & Victoria (Canada), central Oregon's high desert (3 hours), and much more. Portland and Oregon offer an amazing array of outdoor activities that make this a magnet for hiking, biking, fishing, camping, golfing, tennis, skiing, sailing, and much more.
