Our home

Our home is a recently restored (2004) historic officer's home (eventually retire there) that is part of an old Fort McKinley built in 1904. The 1 year process of restoring this old house was an exciting event in our lives! The house is furnished comfortably for family use and has porches overlooking the historic parade ground ( like a new england green), The back porch has view to Portland 2 miles away ( great sunsets). The house is traditionally furnished (2 brs with Queens and 1 with twins) with a mix of new and old. The third floor is a great room for kids with two futons, TV and lots of room.

This is a great place for two couples with or without a couple of small children.

Property features

Who we are

  1. Lisa (office manager) & Rob (architect) are based in Pittsburgh, PA and own a small architectural firm (see the website). Originally from Mass and Maine (married on another small Island), Rob renovated the house as a way to develop a base for future retirment and to enjoy our favorite activity Kayaking ( and some sailing when the opportunity presents itself) during the beautiful Maine Fall. We are flexible to the degree business allows. We currently rent the property from Late June to Labor Day ( early sept), so the ideal exchange would be September or June. In future years '07-'08 we may do exchanges during the Summer months. September is the best time in Maine, however! The summer warmed water keeps the fog away and the beautiful NW breezes are usually in the 70's.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The home sits on Casco Bay's Great Diamond Island just a 20 minute Ferry ride from Portland Maine. See our homeowners association website: www.diamondcove.com. for more details. It is a great place to use as a base for exploration of the Maine Coast. If you Kayak (can be rented nearby) this is heaven with 100's of Islands to explore. The Island has no cars and a shuttle bus takes you from the ferry to the house. The Island is very walkable and has a number of small beaches that are great for seaglass and picnics. The best place to be is in a rocking chair on the front porch chatting with the neighbors!

On a rainy day take the ferry to town and go shopping gallery museums or rent a car and head up the coast to LLbeans or the Maine Maritime Museum. Portland has a very high reputation for restaraunts and food!
Boston can be reached by car or train (2 hours).
