Our home

My home is in an older suburb, about 15 minutes north of downtown Milwaukee. It was originally designed and built by an artist and his wife in the 1940's, in "Frank Lloyd Wright style", and since then has been added on and modifed by several owners, so it is very rambling, with a lot of open-plan living space. I have a lot of art - paintings, drawings, photographs - created by my two chidren (an artist and an architect), as well as other family members and friends. I love color, so the interiors and furnishings are very bright anad cheerful. The house is situated on a wooded 2-acre lot, with many old oak trees and other tall native species, and the property runs down into a ravine which meanders through the suburb to Lake Michigan. In the summer, the house is almost not visible from the street, and hidden from neighbors because of the trees.

Who we are

  1. I am a professional woman in my mid-50's, with two children in their late 20's. I recently left my job to start my own business (making maps), which I can do from "anywhere", so long as there is a high speed internet connection. I have traveled a lot, and lived in other countries in earlier years... and now I'd like to enjoy my new freedom and do some more exploring. I'm very independent, though I sometimes travel with friends or one or the other of my children. I don't need to stay in a "perfect" place so long as it is cozy and comfortable, but I do want to swap with people who are responsible and would appreciate my home.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The neighborhood could be called a "typical American suburb", but it is an older suburb (called Bayside) so it has quite a bit of charm, but all the typical conveniences of nearby shoping centers, etc. There are some wonderful parks and excellent places for biking (two bikes would be available to you), and hiking including the Audubon center, a beautiful nature preserve about 1 mile away on Lake Michigan. At the same time, you can hop on the highway and be in downtown Milwaukee in 15 minutes, or out in beautiful Wiconsin hills and farmland in about the same time. This would not be a "normal" choice for a foreign visitor, but if you've seen the big cities in the States, you might find this a delightful change. It would also be a good place to work or paint while seeing a different side of the States. Look up Wisconsin on Google, and you will see the wonderful day trips you can take from here. Milwaukee is a "hidden gem" of a city with a beautiful lakefront, world-class museums, galleries, music festivals, and great restaurants. Chicago is about 1 1/2 hours by car, or there is good train service.
