Our home

We have a modest, but large and comfortable family home. We have a nice yard with a child's playhouse and an outdoor basketball court. We have a view of the ocean. Tennis, public pool, and soccer field within one block. Our city is the first Alaskan port on the destinations of the beautiful Alaskan cruises. We are known for commercial and sport fishing, whale watching and wild life viewing. We have had black bears in our front yard. We welcome guests to use our family sports equip. such as bikes, tennis racquets, and fishing poles. We have beautiful trails and beaches within a ten minute drive. Ketchikan has a population of 14,000. We live in a city neighborhood, 2 miles from the city center and city museums. We think people who want to experience AK would love to come to our home. You can easily access streams for fishing, but would need to charter a vessel for ocean fishing and whale watching. We do live in a rain forest, so be prepared for rain. It could be unbelievably sunny and warm for all of June, or it could rain everyday. It doesn't matter to SE Alaskans. We play outside, rain or shine. The best thing about our location may be that we are on the spectacular southeast AK Marine Highway Ferry route - an 18 hour trip by ferry and see the ports of Sitka, Petersburg, and Juneau. A ferry trip would be similar to an AK cruise for seeing wild life and ocean and mountain beauty.

We have a fairly new mini van and we are open to considering sharing the use of it.

Who we are

  1. My name is Lori. My husband and I are public school teachers. Dan teaches social studies and I teach elementary school and special education. We have three children, 2 daughters and a son, aged 10 -15. We love to travel together, but we have not had a family trip to Europe. We love the outdoors and sports. We are hikers, runners, and camping enthusiasts. We like to fish for salmon and halibut and stay in the United States Recreational Forest Service cabins that are located around our Tongass National Forest where we live. Even though we like to be active, we have of course, other hobbies. We like to read and study history and meet new people. My family ancestory is all German, and my husband's grandparents came from Mexico.
We are accustomed to having summer renters while we visit our extended families in midwestern USA, but this is our first experience with a house exchange.
We do not live fancy, but we offer everything you need to feel at home.
We would love to settle in to a European city or town and take small trips from that point out. We have our travel books, but we're open to any new travel experiences.
