Our home

**We respond promptly to all requests!**

The first thing people say when they enter our casual, comfortable home is always the same, "It doesn't look this big from the outside!" We agree--and that's one of the reasons why we purchased it! Enter into our spacious living room, with a Wii system, stereo, and TV with DVD player. Continue on to the dining room and large kitchen with a large, three-seat island. Then, enter the family room with a working fireplace (wood stove), a 42" LCD TV and two cozy recliners for resting your feet after a day of hiking and enjoying the mountain air. Step out onto the deck through the French doors to hear the birds chirping and enjoy the cool mountain evenings.

There are two kids' bedrooms:

1. The boys' room, sleeps two with twin-sized bunk beds that have been converted to loft beds, a huge bin of Legos, and lots of other fun stuff for boys. Ours are aged 11 and 12, to give you an idea of what sort of things you might find.

2. Our daughter's room with a bunk bed that sleeps three: a single on the top and a double on the bottom. Our daughter is 10 years old, and has many stuffed animals and dolls for your children to play with.

The master bedroom has a king-sized bed and a TV with DVD player. Our master bedroom area is large--inside the master bedroom you will also find the master bath, a separate office, as well as a treadmill, a recumbent bicycle, and a small weight bench.

For parties greater than seven, you will be glad to know that we have two large, comfortable couches. We can also arrange to have a portable, hideaway bed here for you if required.

We have Wii system with lots of games for game lovers, Internet access for online play, and a game cabinet filled with kid and family games. Although we do not have cable TV, you can fill your mind with lots of fantastic books, a Sonos system in the family room that plays Internet radio, as well as a Netflix subscription through which you are welcome to watch many movies instantly. You may also watch any of the movies and DVDs in our movie cabinet. And a Blockbuster movie rental location is about 10 minutes away. Oh--and bring your laptops, as we have wireless Internet throughout.

Do you have pets? We will be glad to care for them at your home--and we hope that you will care for ours as well. We have three indoor/outdoor cats who use a cat door to come and go as they please. We will ask that you feed them and pet them, and will recommend leaving the cat door locked so that the cats can only exit and must be let in by you. Otherwise, they may bring in a "present" for you :) We will be glad to care for your pets as well. One of our cats is very friendly; the other two are quite shy and you may not see much of them while you are here.

We also have a freshwater fish tank; just a few flakes in the morning and night, and turning on and off the light, is all these pets require.

If we are exchanging homes internationally, we will leave our vehicle behind and hope to exchange vehicles with you. Our vehicle is a 2005 Pontiac Montana minivan that seats 7 (three small kids in the backseat). If we are exchanging homes within driving distance, we will drive our car and thus will not have a car available for your use.

Who we are

  1. We are Craig and Renae, a self-employed couple. Craig owns a pest-control firm; Renae works from home as a full-time business writer and editor. We have three children, ages 12, 11, and 10. So far, we have traveled a little on the eastern half of the U.S., as well as to New Zealand. We love to travel and look forward to exploring the world near and far thanks to many happy home exchanges. We promise to treat your home with respect, and to leave it in the same condition you left it in--or better! :)

Best times for us to travel are during school breaks. Since airfare is very expensive for 5 people, we are most interested in trips within driving distance. That said--we have passports and also want to travel internationally! So if you are from outside the U.S. and would like to exchange with us, please do get in touch. We may be able to find good airfares during the time when you want to exchange!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our large, casual family home, at an elevation of 2,300 feet (701 meters), is in a quiet, rural area on land that just 10 years ago used to be apple orchards. We are in a very quiet neighborhood, although only a 10-minute drive away from a Super Walmart, a very nice Ingles grocery store, and a 15-minute drive away from the quaint, downtown Hendersonville shopping district. There's a large Target about 20 minutes away as well.

What's the weather like today?

If you're arriving from the south or east, you will drive up, up, up onto the plateau, passing the Eastern Continental Divide. Taking one of the first Hendersonville area exits, you will drive by lovely apple orchards and wide-open spaces with mountains towering in the distance. We still admire the view ourselves, even after living here for more than five years!

Hendersonville Visitor's Center:

A few attractions within our area include:

--Lake Lure, home of Chimney Rock and also where the movie Dirty Dancing was filmed: -- be sure to scroll down to see the photos!

--Flat Rock Playhouse, renowned State Theatre of North Carolina with lovely grounds and a great old theatre:

--Carl Sandburg's Home, with a gorgeous lake, glorious views, adorable goats and a fantastic tour through Sandburg's home, which looks just as though he has just stepped out for a walk:

About 40 minutes away lies the artsy, eclectic Asheville, home of the Biltmore House, Grove Park Inn, Grove Arcade, and a walkable downtown.

Asheville, North Carolina:

On the way to Asheville, you will also pass a unique stopping point called Biltmore Park, a planned community with restaurants, a movie theater, and fun shopping, including an O.P. Taylor's, billed as "the coolest toy store on the planet," and a large Barnes & Noble! This is a great place to walk off dinner on a Friday or Saturday night :) Visit to see for yourself.

From our home, drive about 25 minutes to reach the Blue Ridge Parkway. Head north to the Blue Ridge Parkway Visitor's Center, the famous Folk Art Center (great shopping -- see, and further down the road, Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. Head south on the Parkway to visit Mt. Pisgah and to wind your way to Cherokee and the entrance of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

For a long day-trip, leave early to drive through the Smokies to visit Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tennessee!
