Our home

This is a second home on 160 acres in southwestern VT, on the border with New York State and halfway between Manchester and Bennington VT. There are meadows and many small hills/mountains for hiking. There is a 1 1/4 miles of the Battenkill River, prime trout-fishing (as well as swimming and canoeing).
This white farmhouse was built in 1920, and the kitchen is a bit old-fashioned. One bath has been recently remodeled. The upstairs has three bedrooms with twin beds and one small bathroom with a tub. One other bedroom upstairs is currently set for one but has a trundle bed which opens for a kingsize bed. Downstairs has a master bedroom with king size bed and full bath. There is a small dining room, living room (with a wood stove), and porch in the front of the house and a back pine room with wood stove and bathrooom with shower. We have intermittent, dial-up internet because we are at the very end of the telephone lines in that state.
It is a cozy house. There is also a barn/family room that is big and comfortable for entertaining in the summer. There is a loft with two twin beds there and a WC.
There is a garden and a patio and furniture for pleasant meals outside.

Who we are

  1. Susan is an artist, art historian and professor at a nearby college. David also teaches at a New Hampshire college, so we can take off for Christmas, March and other vacations. We have three children (girl 9, boys 11 and 14). We have all done house swaps in Florence, Italy, Brittany and Paris.
Dave speaks Spanish well and is a whiz at languages, having also studied French and Italian. Susan has studied those three languages but is not as facile at languages as her husband. We are opent to any European countries and any Spanish-speaking countries elsewhere in the world. We are particularly interested in areas of artistic, architectural and historic interest.
    Surprise us.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

This is a very rural area: 7 miles in each direction to the nearest town and 1/2 mile to the nearest neighbor. There is great hunting, hiking, walking, fishing, swimming and cross-country skiing on the property.
Cambridge NY, 7 miles west, has a rustic, turn-of-the-20th century feeling to it. Manchester VT, 20 minutes east, is a very sophisticated center for shopping, nightlife, restaurants, etc. There are some great ski resorts: Bromley (35 minutes), Stratton (50 minutes), Okemo and Magic Mountain (1 hour or so), Killington (1 1/4 hours). There is also a very small, rustic ski mountain on the other side in New York: Williard Mountain, which is perfect for young children.
