Just 63 minutes from London by train, but in the heart of the South Downs National Park, ideally situated between the Cathedral towns of Winchester and Chichester. Our home enjoys far reaching views over the Western Weald.
Our house, once an agricultural oak barn, is now a spacious 4 bedroomed home with cathedral ceilings, dramatic staircases and many original features. Thoroughly English and furnished with mainly antique furniture, a Christmas spent here is very special.
Our huge living room, heated gently by under-floor heating, or more robustly by a large wood-burning stove, has double doors to our garden to the West and to our shared courtyard to the East. The dining room is separate and also has a wood burning stove, while the kitchen is typically English with a range cooker which is a joy to work with and a wide range of appliances and utensils as we are keen cooks.
We have 3 large double bedrooms, the master overlooks the valley and has high ceilings and an en-suite shower room. The other 2 overlook our courtyard and have their own adjoining bath/shower rooms. Our 4th bedroom (a single) doubles as a workroom.
A study and several library/reading areas complete the indoor features.
We are a semi retired couple who were in education as primary Head teacher and Educational consultant. We love cooking, theatre, film and concert going as well as good food and wine. Much of our spare time is spent in our holiday home in France and in visiting our children and grandchildren in England and New Zealand. Our home is very special to us, and we are sure that you will treat it, as we would yours, with care.
We are looking to exchange our house for one in New Zealand during the period from December 2016 to February 20th 2017.A non similtaneous exchange would also be considered if you would like to have our house , or our home in France (about to be added to the website)in August 2017. Because we are semi retired we are also interested in 'something different, somewhere different' at other times of the year. Please give us a suggestion!
It is quiet and peaceful here, situated in the midst of fields at the foot of the downs. The immediate area is farmland sprinkled with small picturesque villages and amazingly good pubs and gastro-pubs. We are also 10 minutes by car (there is a Mercedes saloon in the garage should you wish to use it) from Petersfield, a small Market town in Jane Austen country which is good for shopping and has a wide range of bars and restaurants as well as a fast train service to London.
Slightly further afield are: Chichester, Winchester (especially the Christmas market), and Guildford for Cathedrals, theatres, shopping, and historic interest.
Portsmouth, for the Victory, the Mary Rose and the Old Town.
Fishbourne Roman Palace,
Singleton Open Air Museum(especially after Christmas when the Christmas exhibitions are open),
Cheriton and Chawton the Hampshire towns and villages of Jane Austen All are less than an hour by car.
