“This historic hall was built by Samual Hill a silk mill/factory entrepreneur in 1700s, built as a family home. Its elegance is still evident on the outside but now is divided into seven apartments with modern conveniences. The couple who own it were as gracious as the house itself, making us most welcome. The secret to good home exchange is regular communications, email, skype etc, and we all did this prior to our exchange this year resulting in warm relationship and understanding about how to meet the need of each exchanger. This village situated in deep valley has the background of the industrial area in the fairly recent past but has kept its former history with the Old Mill pub dating back to the 1300 situated next to the river with the old church and the mill under the humped bridge. The surrounding extensive farmland and moors not so far away makes it a great base for walking especially for finding the pubs on the far hills just serving Sunday roasts etc. Wonderful stay. We are doing a non simultaneous exchange with their turn coming up next March. Cheers Sheila and Stan in South Australia.. near Adelaide.”

Our home
Our home in Ripponden, Yorkshire, is a very comfortable 2 bedroom apartment in an18th century Georgian mill owner’s house known as Kebroyd Hall. It has a historical ‘blue plaque’ because it is a listed building of importance. It has many original features, like the kitchen hearth, as well as antique clocks and fine art. The deep cast iron, claw foot, bath is great for wallowing in. Fast broadband wi fi and satellite TV give it all the modern comforts. The garden is a delight with patio, outdoor dining, comfortable garden furniture and lawn. The flowerbeds are packed with many unusual plants. There is a seating area at the top of the garden that affords wonderful views of the valley beyond. We have a very comfortable Jaguar XF car which we would consider including in the swap if we could have a reciprocal arrangement. Also two bicycles and a set of men and ladies golf clubs.

Who we are
-
We are a retired lawyer, (working part time as a Tribunal Judge), and freelance journalist splitting our time between our two bed apartment near the River Exe in Devon, south west England, and our two bed apartment in a converted 18th century manor house in Ripponden, Yorkshire (northern England). We are also currently looking for an apartment to buy (which we would also swap) in the Algarve, Portugal where we used to live near wonderful beaches and golf courses. We are primarily looking for swaps in Sydney, Australia, where our son lives. We would also consider South Africa, Thailand, (or anywhere else with good golf that could be used as a stopover on the way to Sydney) as well as Queenstown, New Zealand or Boston and surrounding New England area. Our main interests are golf, cycling, walking, swimming, cinema and we love fine dining too. Our Topsham home would suit walkers, bird watchers, cyclists, and shoppers. It would be a great place to stay if you wanted to stay put as it has everything you need on your doorstep. Our Yorkshire home would suit walkers, pub lovers and people wanting a convenient place from which to explore northern England. We have done about 8 home exchanges and never had a bad experience.

Where is it?
Your neighbourhood
This year, the Tour de France passes almost by our front door. The area is good for cycling, if you like it tough and hilly! Much easier is the walking - we have lovely walking countryside right on our doorstep. There are also lots of high quality wine bars and restaurants and cosy old pubs, one dating from the 16th century. There are many local breweries with 'real ale' on sale in the pubs. It has award winning tapas and Indian curry restaurants. There are interesting old towns to visit nearby: Haworth, York, Harrogate, Hebden Bridge, Heptenstall all within an hour's drive. And places of scenic beauty like the Yorkshire Dales, North York moors, Scarborough. Wordsworth's Lake District (mini Alps) is just a 2 hour drive away and Derbyshire's Peak District is an hour and a half drive. There is a 9 hole golf course 10 minutes’ drive away and a more challenging 18 hole course you can reach in 20 minutes. There is great shopping with high class 'Harvey Nicholls', (in a league with Harrods) in both Leeds and Manchester, and Selfridges, both 40 minutes away by car. Our home is midway (45 minutes by car) between Manchester airport and Leeds Bradford airport, with low cost airlines Ryanair and Jet2 etc, providing cheap flights useful for exploring the rest of Europe. Sowerby Bridge train station is five minutes away from Kebroyd Hall from where you can reach London in around three hours with a change at Leeds. See http://www.yorkshire.com
