Our home

Our home in Topsham, Devon, is a very comfortable 2 bedroom apartment in a small block of 6 similar just off the main (one way) street with many specialist and foodie shops, fine dining restaurants and pubs. It is in super convenient location (next to the bakers) and you don’t need to take the car to go out to eat. Fast broadband wi fi and satellite TV give the apartment all the modern comforts. Besides the double bedroom, there is a second bedroom which we use as an office. This has a cabinet containing a pull down single bed. We have a soft top Renault Megane Cabriolet which we would consider including in the swap if we could have a reciprocal arrangement. Also two Bicycles and a set of ladies golf clubs.

Who we are

  1. We are a retired lawyer, (working part time as a Tribunal Judge), and freelance journalist splitting our time between our two bed apartment near the River Exe in Devon, south west England, and our two bed apartment in a converted 18th century manor house in Ripponden, Yorkshire (northern England). We are also currently looking for an apartment to buy (which we would also swap) in the Algarve, Portugal where we used to live near wonderful beaches and golf courses. We are primarily looking for swaps in Sydney, Australia, where our son lives. We would also consider South Africa, Thailand, (or anywhere else with good golf that could be used as a stopover on the way to Sydney) as well as Queenstown, New Zealand or Boston and surrounding New England area. Our main interests are golf, cycling, walking, swimming, cinema and we love fine dining too. Our Topsham home would suit walkers, bird watchers, cyclists, and shoppers. It would be a great place to stay if you wanted to stay put as it has everything you need on your doorstep. Our Yorkshire home would suit walkers, pub lovers and people wanting a convenient place from which to explore northern England. We have done about 8 home exchanges and never had a bad experience.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Topsham is a delightful estuary town of national renown with characterful period cottages and many elegant 18th century houses in the Dutch style, a reflection of its trading days with the rest of Europe. Since the 14th century it thrived as a port for the city of Exeter. Its high street attracts many weekend shoppers who come from miles around to browse its specialist shops. These include a country cheese shop, book shop, old clocks shop, art galleries, Saturday market, and Quay antiques centre. It has a sailing club, boat builders, museum, bowling club, tennis courts and outdoor swimming pool. There are some great restaurants, one of which ‘La Petite Maison’ you’ll find in the Michelin Guide and friendly pubs, including an old coaching inn, The Globe. There is a special cycle track that runs alongside the river Exe and its canal to the seaside town of Exmouth one way and Exeter Quays the other. Exeter Golf & Country Club is 5 minutes drive and the picturesque coastal course at Buddleigh Salterton, East Devon Golf Club, is 20 minutes drive and welcomes visitors. There are wonderful walks and bird watching right from our doorstep or further afield on Dartmoor. A brilliant train service runs from Topsham to Exmouth in one direction and Exeter and beyond to the other. Boat trips depart from Topsham up and down the river and a single oarsman operates a small ferry across the river to a path and lovely walk to the Turf pub on the other side.
