Our home

Lynch cottage is a quintessential English country cottage BUT with all the mod cons that we now all take for granted.
The cottage would have been primarily built in about 1650-1750. And in that time it would have been changed and extended and not much like it is today, except that we still have all the exposed beams , baker's oven and inglenook fireplace.
Five years ago Lynch Cottage had a very sympathetic but complete make over. It now has 3 en suite bedrooms, one with a shower and the other two with baths and showers over (we are English after all !) The galley kitchen with its stable door is fitted with most appliances and that leads to a bright and light dining room/farmhouse kitchen area. The huge fireplace in here is sealed off sadly.
In the sitting room, there is a wood burner which is so cosy and makes you want to stay in during the winter evenings! however there is gas central heating throughout the cottage so you will never need to feel cold. There are exposed beams all over the cottage and several natural stone walls upstairs.
On the ground floor is a bedroom with a king size bed and also a cot which could be removed if you prefer (grandchildren!) this room has the en suite shower room and would be wheelchair accessible.
On the upstairs floor we have a large double bedroom with en suite bathroom/shower and exposed stone walls and also the main bedroom with a superking bed and en suite bathroom with shower over. There is sealed double glazing throughout.
Outside is a very large walled garden, mostly lawn and mature trees and many sitting areas. Also an old well (sealed off). Car parking for 5-6 cars.
Interior design is one of my passions and hopefully Lynch Cottage will appeal to many overseas visitors who are looking for a 'taste of old England'

Who we are

  1. Jim and I (Lynn) are semi-retired (well I am !)from a busy life as antiques dealer and running a 5 star bed and breakfast business.
We have two sons and two grandchildren. Our younger son lives in Perth in Cottesloe and is an Estate Agent in Freemantle. We really would like to swap houses with someone from Cottesloe so that we can spend Christmas 2014 with him .
Our other son lives in London where is too is an Estate Agent in Chelsea.
We have a miniature schnauzer, Otis, who would not be here for the house swap! he is in a few of the pictures!
My brother and sister in law would be on hand to answer any questions and to help you settle in.
Our son and daughter in law in London would be happy to act as guides should you visit London on your trip.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Somerton is an old Saxon town and although not big we have practically everything that you may need, such as three supermarkets (although there are many huge ones nearby) chemist, beauty salons, pubs, churches, taxis, dentist, doctor, coffee shops, fish and chip shop! (very good one too). We always say that if we ever got snowed in we would survive.
Lynch Cottage is a 3 minute level walk from the centre of Somerton so although a car would be useful for trips further afield you could manage quite well without one.
Bath/Bristol/Taunton/Yeovil/Glastonbury are our nearest towns and cities. Bristol airport is only 1 hour away with its cheap flights to Europe.
London is a 2-2.5 hour drive from Somerton and the main line train station is 6 miles from Lynch Cottage. Coaches go to London twice a day and are wonderfully inexpensive and reliable.
We have fishing lakes and golf courses nearby.
Next door is a Country House Hotel (our cottage was probably the gate house at one time)so extra accommodation for your guests is readily available.
