Our home

Our home is a four bedroomed detached house situated 9 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, one bedroom is now entirely used as a music room, my husband, Steve, being a keen guitarist.
There is a large kitchen dining room which is very much the hub of the house. There are double doors opening to the substantial rear garden, a wood burning stove makes this space very cosy in the evenings.
The master bedroom has a king sized bed and en-suite shower room.
There are double beds in both of the other bedrooms. There are two family bathrooms and an extra toilet in the back porch.
The house provides a comfortable, convenient and pleasant living environment.

We also have a second home about 90 minutes drive away, along the Roman Wall, in the beautiful Lake District. It is a small two bedroomed cottage in the market town of Keswick. This cottage is about one hundred and fifty years old, lots of character but has steep stairs so may not be suitable for toddlers or the elderly but it is available if required.

Who we are

  1. Steve and Carol are recently retired, I was a headteacher and Steve a furniture maker, there are many examples of Steve's handiwork around our houses. Since retirement Steve has been very busy with his music; we enjoy going to see bands and concerts at the Sage, a magnificent musical venue in Gateshead. We also enjoy walking, particularly with our collie dog Jess, in the hills and mountains of the Lake District.
We also love all things Italian and like to visit Italy as often as we can, never often enough! Our summer holidays are often spent with friends in Ireland, we particularly love the mountains and coastline of the west coast of Ireland.
Our son and his wife live in Melbourne Australia and we wish to spend more time in Australia, getting to know their world.
We have not done a home exchange before but have heard very positive reports about it from friends.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our house is situated on the outskirts of Newcastle on a quiet estate with open country only minutes away. The North East of England is steeped in history going back to pre-Roman times. We are within easy reach of Iron Age hill forts, the largest structure ever built by the Romans (Hadrians Wall runs about 3km south of us)early Christian sites of Holy Island up the coast, and the stupendous cathedral in Durham 30km to the south. We have a beautiful coastline dotted with medieval castles, stately homes open to the public, and an industrial heritage with the birth of the railways in the North East.
Newcastle, only 15 minutes drive away is a city full of shops, a cultural centre with theatres, music venues and galleries. It is also famous for it's many bridges, including the Tyne Bridge on which the Sydney Harbour Bridge is based.
Travelling around is easy with Edinburgh and Glasgow only a 2 hour drive away, The Lake district 90 minutes and fast trains to London that take under 3 hours. Flights from nearby Newcastle International airport connect to many European and worldwide destinations. A 5 minute taxi drive gets us to our flight to Australia !
