“In July 2019 we spent two weeks in Judith & Tony’s bungalow. We had a wonderful time. We enjoyed the beautiful garden with lots of birds (Goldfinches, Bullfinches!) very much. Their house is very comfortable and has everything you need. Shops and restaurants are nearby. You can start lots of nice walks just from the house, for instance along the Marple locks; but also a bit further. Although we had no car we were able to visit the Peaks and several cities by bus and train. Cycling is rather difficult, you need an e-bike or a bike with a lot of gears, because the hilly region. Judith and Tony have a lot of useful information, about their house and the region. During and before the exchange the contact with them was warm and easy. We highly recommend this location. Our home
Ours is a detached bungalow with delightful garden, very well located for visits by road and rail to many attractive areas and popular historic cities and locations in Northern England and Wales. From our home in Marple, a village with a wide range of eateries, pubs and shops, there are walks for all tastes and abilities, some along country tracks and others along the intriguing canal system created in the 19th Century and still extensively used today. In every direction are beautiful views, many looking towards the Peak District, the National Park which is 'on our doorstep' and offers beautiful walking and cycling routes. Several interesting and useful bus routes are very close and train stations on 2 different lines are within a 15 minute walk. We are only 25 minutes by car from Manchester airport (low-cost routes available across Europe) and 15 minutes from the national motorway network. A visit to the coast, mountains and castles of North Wales or the lakes and fells of the Lake District can be an easy day trip. Of Britain's 15 National Parks, 5 are within 2 hours' drive.

Our house has spacious living and dining rooms as well as a good sized office. There are 2 double bedrooms(one with en-suite), sleeping up to 4 , as well as a comfortable folding bed for one person in the 'office', and a 'family bathroom'. There is a good sized conservatory, as well as large lounge, to relax in and a lovely garden with a summer house and space for outside eating. Bikes are available for your use and there are plenty of walking areas to explore nearby including some beside the charming local canals - we have maps to help you.

“Wonderful experience in Marple and Manchester area! We really enjoyed our staying in Judith´s house, so comfortable and relaxing time there, unforgettable moments in the garden! Marple is a very nice village, easy to find everything, local atmosphere and well located by public transport, wonderful walks around the area. And perfect to visit surprising cities like Manchester and Liverpool, for example. Thanks! We really recommend this english experience.”
“Thanks very much to Judith and Tony for exchanging with us. Your home is lovely and located in a beautiful village with fabulous walks in the local area. We particularly enjoyed our walk around Lyme House, the location for Pemberly in the BBC production of 'Pride and Prejudice'.”
Who we are
-
Married only 12 years ago, Tony and I wanted to make the most of our time together and so we retired at the same time. As so many people say, retirement is not dull! Our two families of 5 grown-up children, plus spouses and 6 grand-children help to keep us amused. We enjoy working as well as relaxing in our garden where we have many bird visitors. We like to walk and cycle in our local area and to do so when on holiday. Our interest in live music and theatre takes us into Manchester regularly to enjoy a wide range of performers and we both play bridge.
Having particularly enjoyed holidays in which we lived less as tourists than as residents, we have greatly enjoyed our 6 years as home exchangers. We also know that our visiting partners have appreciated living for a short while in our lovely home area. Our first experiences of exchanging were from January to May 2011 when we were involved in a series of really wonderful exchanges with partners in California, New Zealand, Australia and South Africa during a Round the World trip. We have since had many further excellent exchanges in France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, the USA and the UK. Finally, we have family in South Korea, who you can see in the photo when they visited us, and we have visited them sometimes on the way to further home exchanges in Australia and New Zealand.

Your neighbourhood
Marple centre (5 minutes walk) offers a good range of shops, restaurants, pubs and bars, a delightful old cinema, swimming pool, library, churches, 2 parks, etc and its 2 railway stations both link you to Manchester (20 minutes) and one gives access to trains to Sheffield. A 15 minute walk takes you to the charming old village of Marple Bridge with more good options for eating out. http://www.marple-uk.com/
Manchester offers a lively cosmopolitan city centre with music and theatre, museums and art galleries as well as its much admired 19th century architecture and excellent shopping. Other easily accessible cities are historic Chester and York, Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield. The area is rich in historic houses; three "stately home gems", Tatton Hall, Dunham Massey and Lyme Hall (film setting in Pride and Prejudice) each being 15 to 30 minutes away by car.
The area offers a variety of landscapes in which to walk, cycle or drive; rural Cheshire to the South and the moors and dales of the Derbyshire Peak very nearby to the East. In all directions you will find interesting villages with quaint buildings and characterful pubs!
