Our home

Our house is large, comfortable and spacious and ideal for large families or big mixed groups. It is a Victorian villa built in 1874 but we have recently added an architect designed extension which overlooks the garden. There are two large public rooms, one with cable TV and a third smaller library/study also with cable TV and a single bed. The master bedroom in the attic has a bath in the room and an ensuite toilet. There are three further double room, a huge children's room/nursery with two loft beds and a double sofa bed and an extra single bed in the study. There is also a large, well equipped kitchen diner opening off the two sitting rooms and overlooking the garden. Our style is eclectic with a mix of antiques, old stuff and new stuff and the house is full of interesting objects, books, art and toys. The large, enclosed and private garden (25m) has plenty of sun and shade and a deck for eating out with barbecue. For the younger members of the party there is also a secret two-storey den at the end of the garden, a climbing frame and a sandpit.

Who we are

  1. We are an English/Scottish couple in our late forties with five daughters ranging in age from 5 to 19. I run a small consultancy business from home and my husband is the resident designer for a major British theatre company working across the UK and internationally. We are keen to find ways of giving our children the chance to explore the world and we are always happy to make contact with like-minded people from other places. If you are interested in visiting Scotland we can help you find accommodation there through my various family members in and around Glasgow.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our house is in Hackney, one of the most dynamic and exciting parts of London. Stoke Newington, one of the most popular areas of Hackney, is culturally diverse and has a long and fascinating history but retains its village atmosphere. Stoke Newington Church Street with its small independent shops and excellent range of cafes and restaurants is ten minutes walk away, as is Abney Park Cemetery, an extraordinary place which is well worth a visit. Beautiful Clissold park recently restored with a cafe, public tennis courts and children's playground is five minutes away and just behind the house is the Castle Climbing Centre and West Reservoir sailing centre. Clissold Leisure Centre which has two 25m indoor pools and gym and other facilities is ten minutes walk away and London Fields Lido which has a heated 50m outdoor pool is fiftenn minutes away by bus. We don't have a car (although we do have bikes you can use) and you won't need one either as we are very well served with public transport. The underground is ten minutes away and from there it is a fifteen minute ride to central London. There is an excellent local shop two minutes away and several supermarkets within a mile or so. The house is on a fairly busy residential street with a very diverse urban population. You can easily hear six different languages on your way to the park. But the house and garden are surprisingly quiet so once you have had your fill of London you can come home and relax in peace. We are a five minute bus ride from the London overground train service.
