Our home

Our home is a spacious semi-detached house, built in 1930 and still retaining some original deco touches (such as leaded windows in the hallway, curves and lots of exposed wood). It's light and airy and a wonderful family home. We've done a huge amount of work on the house since moving in 12 years ago, most recently converting the loft into a large bedroom with quirky en suite bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. The kitchen/diner looks out onto our pride and joy - the garden (a wasteland when we moved in), which contains a sweeping flower border, native hedges, a vegetable and fruit garden (you're welcome to help yourself to any produce during your stay) and a towering willow hiding a large trampoline, swing and slide. Upstairs are four bedrooms. The large loft bedroom has a super kingsize double bed (180x200cm). On the floor below are three more bedrooms - a small one with a kingsize double (150x200cm), and two larger bedrooms, both with standard double beds (135x190cm). One of these rooms also has a sofabed that pulls out into another double - meaning that we could sleep 10 in total at a push. There's also a 5th small bedroom that we use as an office.

Who we are

  1. We are Jon and Selena, a writer/teacher and a psychiatric nurse, and we have two lovely, lively boys, Joe (14) and Charlie (11). We also have two sweet-natured and child-friendly cats, Sparky and Jeffrey, who give back a lot of love for a little feeding. We've completed many highly successful home exchanges and can't now conceive of another way of spending a holiday.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Forest Hill is a lively, multicultural district of South London that has really come into its own in the last few years. Our house is 4 minutes walk from the centre, which contains a range of shops (including a good sized Sainsbury's supermarket, a deli and an excellent butcher), pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and a swimming pool. There's a small supermarket at the end of our road, which stocks all the basics. There are even more places to eat, drink and shop in East Dulwich, just a 5-minute drive or bus ride away. Forest Hill even has its own superb museum, the Horniman, which is brilliant for kids, and sits in its own beautifully landscaped gardens atop a hill with stunning views out over the city.

We have excellent transport links. London Bridge and the Thames is less than 15 minutes away by train (the station is a 3-minute walk from our house), and we're on the London Overground, which is part of the Tube network. You can be in the West End in half an hour. We're about 40 minutes from Gatwick Airport by train via East Croydon.
