Our home

Our house isn't posh, but it's very comfortable, convenient, spacious and efficient. It is quiet and peaceful, with a large (very large, by London standards) south-facing, tree-filled, walled garden. Local shopping, restaurants and buses are just moments away, as is the huge open expanse of Hampstead Heath.

There are excellent, quick and convenient bus, tube and overground rail connections to central London and around.

On the top floor there are a single and a double bedroom; they share a bathroom. The double bedroom has a balcony with spectacular views over Central London.

Our main double bedroom with ensuite bathroom is on the first floor, where there is also a twin bedroom and the third bathroom. Our two studies (both with broadband internet) are also on the first floor (one has a sofa bed to accommodate a couple for short stays).

On the ground floor is the large sitting room with a gas “coal-effect” fire and decent 32 inch TV (100+ stations and hard disc recorder); an archway leads to the dining room (comfortable seating for 8) with French doors to the garden and the patio for outdoor eating and barbecues. There’s a well equipped eat-in kitchen and a separate utility room and downstairs wc.

We have secure gated off-street parking, where we keep the Toyota Prius (exempt from the infamous Central London congestion charge) – we would like to do a car swap.

Who we are

  1. We're a retired couple in our sixties. Alison used to be a book publisher, and Richard a business consultant. Our eldest son and his wife live near Sydney (hence our wish to do a swap with someone near Rose Bay), and our younger son lives about a mile away from us with his wife and their little daughter - so there's help at hand if you can't make the TV do what you want it to do.

We also have a second in France; this means we don't have to do a simultaneous swap.

It's our son and daughter-in- law we're going to see, not the sun, so we're very flexible about the dates when we visit Sydney - provided it's after August 2014.

We really do need to be within fairly easy reach of Rose Bay (not more than an hour or so at the outside - nearer is better); we'd be very happy in central, east, or northern Sydney.

But, sorry, we will not reply to enquiries from outside the Sydney area.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our house is a two-minute walk from the huge open expanse of Hampstead Heath. We're on the Eastern (Highgate) side, two minutes on foot from the public tennis courts, and three minutes walk from the Highgate Ponds (where you can swim in July, August and September - and, if you're very hardy, or completely mad, throughout the year).

Karl Marx is buried in the amazing Highgate Cemetery just up the road.

There are buses a two-minute walk away which will take you to the Tube, to all the main rail stations, and to the sights, theatres, concert halls and other attractions of London.

Also a two-minute walk is our local shopping street (butcher, small supermarket, greengrocer, hairdresser, newsagent and a couple of decent restaurants and coffee shops.
