Our home

This cottage is brilliant because it's incredibly central (walking distance to Hyde Park, on 3 tube lines and 6 bus routes), has the world famous Portobello Market a hundred metres away but is on a quiet part of the street with very little motor traffic at any time, so you can enjoy the peace or stroll and take in the buzz 5 minutes away. We totally rebuilt the interior when we moved here 10 years ago, so it's comfy, everything works, and although small the downstairs is open plan with high ceilings so feels spacious. There's a piano, loads of music to listen to, books to read and a roof terrace for al fresco meals/barbecue. Decent double bedroom and 2 small singles - all with built in cupboards.

Who we are

  1. We are Mike and Shuna, in our 60's, downsized a few years back to encourage our adult children (now 31 and 29) to move out! Mike's book Our Generous Gene is the philosophy we try to live by, and he works to link philanthropists and companies to NGO's where they can make a real difference in the world. (www.ourgenerousgene.com). Shuna helps out as finance partner and general provider of sound advice!

We love travelling, exploring new places & new ideas, sailing, cycling, music and theatre and all the variety London has to offer. For exchanges - a new place to explore, city breaks in the autumn/spring/winter, whilst in the summer our ideal is a total change of scene - somewhere with space, sky, sea, countryside and a chance to relax, an escape from the city where we can soak up the slow vibe and live the simple life! We've made several successful exchanges and are very happy with the way they have worked out.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Notting Hill is incredibly popular - good for celebrity spotting, famous for Portobello Market. Wide streets & green spaces, tree-lined avenues, grand white stucco houses and a huge variety of restaurants, shops, pubs and 3 cinemas within walking distance. The underground is 5 minutes and a 10 minute journey to Oxford St away. You can reach most tourist destinations by underground in 30 minutes, and the hop-on hop-off bus tours pass right through Notting Hill as well. Portobello Market has fruit and vegetable stalls most days and vintage clothes, antiques and touristy offerings on Fridays and Saturdays. Hyde Park and Holland Park are a short stroll away and it's very easy to cycle everywhere (you can cycle to Buckingham Palace and Houses of Parliament mostly through parks in just 15 minutes.) Bike rental (the London scheme the locals call 'Boris Bikes' because Boris Johnson introduced them) is within 100 metres of the house.

Best restaurants
Too many to mention - we have put them together with other information in a welcome guide!
Nightlife
There are several local clubs - but as we're past clubbing age we leave you to your own research!
Favourite cafés
Just to mention one - Farm Girl is a minute away and now so popular that there are queues most days. Gail's bakery is a few hundred metres further away, but does the best croissant and pain au chocolat we have found locally.
Where to go shopping
Oxford Street is 10minutes east by tube. Or take the tube just 2 stops in the other direction for Westfield - a huge shopping mall with multi-cinema complex and a huge variety of restaurants
Your area's cultural and historical landmarks
Too many to mention: including Hyde Park, Kensington Palace, Holland Park, Albert Hall - all within walking distance.
Local walks
If you like walking you can walk almost entirely through parks to Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament in about an hour, passing by Buckingham Palace
Places you love to exercise
Hyde Park is on the doorstep
Top day trips
Take your pick. When the weather is fine a river trip from Westminster to Greenwich is fun.
