Our home

Our home is a recently converted farmworker's cottage in an idyllic rural setting within the South Downs National Park. From the back of the house are far reaching views to the hills and to the front, views of the ancient village church. It is a comfortable house with a large double bedroom and en suite bathroom at the back, two further bedrooms and a study which can double up as a bedroom. The living room is large and runs from the back to the front of the house capturing the light in both the morning and the evening. In the winter we light the woodburner. The kitchen has an oil fired range (raeburn) for cooking on (perfect for roast dinners!) as well as an electric hob and a dining room area. The garden surrounds the house on three sides and has direct access onto the field at the back. We have a very lovely, low maintenance cat, who can be kept in the lobby if you don't want her in the house.

Who we are

  1. We are a family of four, Tania (my partner), Rafferty (14), Hebe (11) and myself - Mark. Tania is a film director who works freelance in and around Brighton, I am a writer and academic working at the University of Sussex. We moved out to the country from Lewes so that our children could enjoy a childhood in the countryside and we could enjoy the peace and quiet. We have just finished converting and extending the house and are now turning our attention to the garden where we have just built a rose arbour. We have succesfully house swapped for nine years.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live close to the historic town of Lewes and only 10 kilometres from the exciting and vibrant town of Brighton. Our home combines the peace and quiet of the beautiful english countryside with easy access to culture and nightlife. The house itself is situated north of Lewes near to a bend in the river in a small community of old houses and barn conversions. The road is very quiet as it only serves our houses and there is no through traffic. It takes 25 minutes to walk into Lewes along the river (or you can paddle in our canoe!). There is a main line station direct into London just a ten minute walk away over the hill in Cooksbridge. It takes an hour on the train to get into central London where you can enjoy the city's galleries, restaurants, theatres and culture. You might want to explore Brighton, one of the most lively and fashionable cities in England or visit old Norman castles or stately homes. Or, go for long walks on the South Downs, go the beach, go cycling ... or just relax in the garden.
