Our home

We have a clean and comfortable 4/5 bedroomed family home with stunning views in a rural island location. Indoors there is a spacious living room with a large picture window with views over the Loch of Tankerness. The dining room has patio doors to a fenced off garden area and adjoins the kitchen. There is a small utility room with washing machine and sink.
As well as the living room we have recently converted the integral garage into a purpose-built music room, though it also has a very comfortable double sofa-bed meaning we can house 2 couples each with their own double bedrooms as well as a further 3 single bedrooms, 2 or which have space for further air mattresses if need be. (We have 2).

We have a large number of musical instruments which our guests would be free to use and good quality hi-fi systems, digital TV, DVD etc. There is a garage with several bikes, a child's bike seat, a tag-along bike and a bike trailer. You'd never guess we have kids...

Outdoors there is a large secure garden, brand new summer house, fenced off area outside the patio doors and a large children's swing/slide/play house.

Who we are

  1. We are a married couple in our forties with three little girls aged 5, 7 and 9. Peter is a music teacher and Donna is a stay at home mum for now. We have travelled extensively thoughout Europe, North America, North Africa and Australia although this has been curtailed somewhat since the children arrived. We enjoy life in Orkney and would like to introduce visitors to this fascinating place.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Our home is situated in Tankerness in the East Mainland of the Island of Orkney. The location is rural, but only 10 kms from Kirkwall, the capital of Orkney. There are beaches everywhere with white sand, seals, occasional whales and amazing birdlife. Orkney is famous for, among other things, 'Skara Brae', a 5000-year-old stone village almost perfectly preserved beneath sand dunes for most of that time. There are a great many other Neolithic Sites of great interest on the Mainland and the other islands in the archipelago. Kirkwall is an historic town with a magnificent cathedral dating back to the 12th century when Orkney was ruled from Norway, museums, galleries, shops and restaurants etc. More information can be got from
There are ample opportunites to visit some of the other Orkney islands, either via causeway, ferry or inter-island flight.
Orkney was an important stategic location in both world wars and there are a large number of interesting sites, including Scapa Flow, a haven for divers interested in the many sunken warships there. Orcadians are extremely friendly and visitors often come back time and again to savour the slower pace of life, the trusting nature of the people (doors are very seldom locked) and the peaceful, scenic environment. In summer it doesn't get dark until after 10 at night.
