Our house is a 200 year old traditional stone farmhouse that has been fully modernised, whilst retaining its character. It sits amidst a large garden with a stream running through it (often dry in Summer!). There are beautiful views from every window and there is lots of natural light. The house was completely modernised only 2 years ago and is comfortably furnished. The downstairs childrens' playroom can be arranged as a double bedroom, making a 4th bedroom and it has a shower room/wc nearby. If a 9th person is staying, the downstairs study offers a fold-up single bed. Of the 3 upstairs bedrooms, two have 2 x single beds and one has a double bed (for 2 persons). There is lots of space, with 2 sitting rooms and a spacious dining room, with French windows onto a patio overlooking the garden. The house is comfortable, warm in winter and offers every modern amenity, including a study/office two PC's and guest internet access.
We are a family of 4 - with our two very active sons aged 5 and 4. We often spend our week-ends and holidays in Rutland, but we work in financial services in London - so we live there most of the time. We enjoy the countryside, history and culture - but our boys ride horses, play football, rugby, tennis and they love walking too. There are commercial attractions for kids in the area too, with theme/amusement parks within easy distance. We appreciate good food and wine - and Rutland has some great places to eat and drink. The guide we issue to visitors includes places we recommend. Although there is lots to do, we also appreciate the opportunity to chill after a hectic week in London. Rutland offers us that - if we are feeling lazy, we can just open a bottle and relax in the garden, or (in Summer) linger over a BBQ or an outdoor lunch. The house is quiet and remote, yet only 3 miles from Stamford or the main road to London. Rutland is a great place that is one of England's best kept secrets - which we are proud to share.
Rutland is England's smallest county (province) and is traditional England at its best. There are beautiful stone villages with excellent pubs, rolling countryside dotted with woodland and numerous places of historical and cultural interest. Oakham (8 miles away) is Rutland's very prosperous county town - with its hidden boutiques/antique shops awaiting discovery. Stamford (3 miles away) is the finest stone town in England, with hundreds of beautiful buildings and the fabulous 1000 year old George Hotel. World famous Burghley House is just outside, a fantastic XVIth century palace which is open to the public and set in beautiful and interesting grounds. Rutland Water (5 miles) is the largest man-made lake in Europe and offers a huge range of activities, including cycling tracks, sailing, d fishing and nature reserves - plus first class equipment hire facilities. There are several golf courses nearby, including Rutland Golf Club - you do not need to be a member in order to play. Eating varies from the basic and cheap through to several restaurants with Michelin stars. London is only 100 miles away and York little more. Both can be reached in about an hour via high speed train, whilst Cambridge is about an hour by road. Rutland is in central England - so large parts of the country are readily accessible. Whether young or old, or wanting history/culture, sports or outdoor activities, you will have plenty to do. We will provide written guidance to suit your interests and make sure you have a memorable holiday.
