Our home

This stunning, light, and large apartment directly overlooking the sea and beach (pebbles with some sand at low tide) in Brighton/Hove on the English Channel is owned by my daughter, her husband, and two children, with whom we would go on this exchange.

The Brighton apartment has 4 bedrooms and 3 full bathrooms. It covers the whole floor on the second floor of this historic Edwardian building. It has one extremely large living-dining area with direct sea view on the beach just across the road (6 huge Victorian windows looking onto sea); a large wood-burning fireplace in living room; separate TV/family room; modern kitchen; main bedroom with en suite shower room/toilet; two children's rooms with 2nd bathroom/toilet; study/bedroom; 3rd shower room/toilet. It is on the 2nd floor of a beautiful, historic-listed building (building previously owned by King Edward VII) with wide staircases and a handsome Queen Anne elevator/lift.

Walk along beach, boardwalk or on shopping street one block away to downtown Brighton with its celebrated little shops, restaurants, places of entertainment in less than half an hour. Children can play on wide green lawn directly across the building and along the boardwalk. Restaurants and easy shopping also nearby. Also very easy access to London as it is under an hour by train to the centre of London.

We also own a house on the sea in lower Brittany, France, at Pornic, near Nantes, which can be exchanged at certain times. THE HOUSE IS MODERN, ENTIRELY REBUILT TEN YEARS AGO, HAS PANORAMIC VIEWS OF THE SEA, ONE MINUTE FROM CLOSEST OF SEVERAL BEACHES, ONE MINUTE FROM FOOD SHOPPING, PHARMACY, ETC. WITH MILES OF SEASIDE WALKING PATH AND TWO KILOMETERS WALK OR DRIVE TO PORNIC CENTER WITH ITS RESTAURANTS AND PORT. PLEASE CONTACT US IF INTERESTED.

Who we are

  1. I am a retired American diplomat recently university professor, and my French-born wife is a former nurse and psychotherapist. Pictured in our 50th anniversary photo four years ago are our daughter in Brighton, who is a child therapist, with 17 and 18 year old son and daughter. Her economist husband directs a large institute of international food and other development assistance. Our younger daughter and her 11 year old daughter live in Los Angeles with her schoolteacher husband. We sometimes travel all together, other times just as a couple.

We are mainly interested at present in an exchange for about TWO WEEKS this Christmas-New Year, 2018, either in Los Angeles just as a couple, or the Caribbean with our California daughter's family. We have exchanged several times with friends in Washington, D.C., and Moscow and six times with others in Paris (when we lived in London), California and Florida. We take good care of homes.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Closest to Gatwick airport, about 45 minutes drive; trains twice every hour to London Victoria station; travel time under an hour, direct. Drive around coast or to west country as well as London (an hour and a half).

The house in France is in Sainte Marie sur Mer (two kilometers from the center of Pornic and its port), one minute from beaches and food shopping amenities, one house in from the sea. You can walk, bicycle, swim, play golf or tennis, and sightsee in other parts of Brittany, including Nantes, 40 minutes away, voted the most pleasant city in France a few years ago. There is an international airport near Nantes and Paris is a bit over two hours by train, four hours by car.
