Our home

Our home is detached house, on a small estate in a village, just outside the town of Newbury. It is compact, clean and well decorated, bright and easy to look after. It is centrally heated and has an additional fire in the living room for extra comfort.
The living room has two large sofas, digital television and Wi-Fi. Leading off this room is a large comfortable south facing conservatory. A small dining room seats six, and there is a stylish, well equipped kitchen with cooker, hob, dish washer and large fridge. There is also a downstairs toilet. The garden has a patio area with lots of potted plants (which will need watering please), outdoor seating and a BBQ. At back of the garage is a utility area with a washing machine, dryer, freezer and spare drinks fridge.
Upstairs are two double bedrooms - one with a king sized bed and one with a two single beds and both have large built in wardrobes. The third bedroom is set up as an office, with a very occasional bed. The bathroom has a large walk-in shower.

Who we are

  1. We are Gill and Iain Stuart, in our 60’s and have both been retired for about five years. Iain was a design engineer who worked for the same company for 38 years and Gill was an administrator for a small software company.
    We enjoy travelling and would like to spend about 4 weeks during February or March 2018 in Costa Rica enjoying some sun during our UK winter. We realise that this is not the best time to visit the UK, but we have a holiday home that we normally visit for 6 weeks from late May, all of June and into July and then again for a second 6 weeks period during September and October. Our house in the UK is unoccupied during this time and would be available for a non-simultaneous swap.
    This will be our second attempt at “house swapping” but we have had lots of different “house sitters” who looked after our elderly dog until he died.

The house is situated in the village of Hermitage, surrounded by forestry, in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There are many lovely walks locally and the Ridgeway long distance footpath is only a 10 minute drive away if you are feeling more adventurous. The village has two shops and two pubs and a large garden centre. The main shopping town is Newbury. There is very little public transport in the village and so a car would be essential. This could be made available by arrangement. There are many historical sites(the nearest being Highclere Castle of Downton Abbey fame) within easy travelling distance.
It is only a 5 minute drive from a junction of the M4 and the A34, and one hours’ drive will take you to Heathrow and Windsor to the East, Southampton and Portsmouth to the South, Bath and Stonehenge to the West and Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon to the North. The train from Newbury or Didcot (the closest railway stations) will get you to London in about an hour.
