Our home

Our home was built in 1510, so has lots of lovely period features such as an inglenook in the kitchen, beams in the bedrooms etc. However, it is also totally up to date in every other way and lovingly and stylishly furnished with works of art, oriental rugs and antiques. We run a country house B & B, but very much to suit ourselves and our love of travel and, of course, are closed when we are travelling. Our walled garden and patio are delightful and well cared for. 4 bedrooms have en suite bathrooms. There is also a large family bathroom. We have a large farmhouse style kitchen, with sofa, tv, dining table seating up to 10, etc., a large sitting room with a grand piano, a dining room with table for 10+, an office/study with desktop braodband computer/scanner/printer and fax. We also have wifi access for your own laptop. Although the house is large, we would prefer not to exchange with a large group, unless they were seniors. Stansted Airport is 11 miles away, although we are not on the flight path. From here you can get to most of Europe, often at amazing prices. Check out www.ryanair.com and www.easyjet.com. We have flown to Nice for less than the cost of a pint of beer, plus taxes!

Who we are

  1. We are Nessie (62) and Peter (67). Peter ran his own business from London and Nessie was a nurse/social worker/care manager. We now run a luxury country house B & B from our home when we are not closed for travelling! We have exchanged homes five times in Perth Australia, where we have three sons and nine grandchildren. We are planning a cruise on the Queen Mary 2 in September 2008 and would like to stay in New York for around 7 days before making the return trip. Our home would be available for approximately 20 days, although we would only need accommodation in New York for 7 days. An Audi A6 Avant Estate car would be available for use in England., although we would not need one in New York. If your apartment/home in New York is a second home and our dates are not convenient to you, we would be happy to offer B & B for a similar period at another time to suit you, although not a car. We would however, collect and return you to the airport bus, and arrange car hire if required. We would also be agreeable to extend any exchange time in our home beyond our return to the UK, if this proved convenient.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Great Bardfield is in East Anglia and is a pretty medieval village 10 miles from Braintree, 11 miles from Saffron Walden and 3 miles from Thaxted. There is a general store/post office, butchers and hairdresser. Lots of lovely country walks abound. Within 40 minutes you can be in the centre of Cambridge, and in an hour you can be in East London. We often go into the West End of London to the theatre and are there in just over an hour. Suffolk, with its lovely villages and towns full of antique shops and Constable country are half an hour away. The sea can be reached in an hour. There are plenty of sporting activities locally, and we have arranged for previous home exchangers to have temporary membership of our golf club for approximately £25. Golf clubs are available to borrow, both for a man and a woman.
