Our home

Our house is a charming Victorian (built 1871) upper conversion in the rural Scottish Borders, situated in the town of Galashiels (population 14000). Large rooms, high ceilings/wooden floors, farmhouse kitchen and modern bathrooms make this a comfortable home on two floors. The lounge has a flat screen TV with Freeview TV (100 channels) and cosy gas fire. We have a housekeeper who comes in once a week. We have high speed broadband on an Apple iMac computer. The house sits in an acre of ground. In our own private garden we have a summerhouse and barbeque area surrounded by lovely woodland.

Who we are

  1. Lorna and Malcolm are married, in our late thirties, with a 9 year old daughter. We are both professionals (secondary teachers) now that Malcolm has finished a period involved in professional rugby. This will be our second home exchange, although we have travelled extensively throughout the world. We love France and would look to use our exchange house as a base for touring the local area in our school holidays.

We are a five minute walk into the town centre, which features a range of shops, large supermarkets (including Tesco and Marks and Spencers), a four screen cinema and local swimming pool. The excellent local hospital is a five minute drive away. The Borders is famous for its historical monuments, abbeys and castles, all of which are within easy driving distance (30 minutes maximum with many attractions less than ten minutes away). You are in Sir Walter Scott country with his stately home Abbotsford only five minutes drive. There are many pretty villages and market towns including Melrose (five minutes) and Peebles (twenty five minutes) and a wide range of award winning restaurants featuring the best of local produce. There are over thirty golf courses within a thirty mile radius and the local fishing (River Tweed) is particularly famous. Mountain bikers have a world class facility, Glentress near Peebles, on their doorstep and the Borders also offers more leisurely cycling and walking trails. Horse riding is readily available. Edinburgh is an easy 45 minute drive with its mix of cosmopolitan city life and historic attractions. This is our local airport although Newcastle is only 90 minutes drive.
