Our home

We live in the beautiful South Hams known as the pearl of the West country. We love our really comfortable, sunny, warm family home which has a front, side and back garden in a friendly neighbourhood close to Totnes and Dartmoor National Park.

The garden has fruit trees and a beautiful cabin with wood burner and sofa bed which we use as our office.

The cosy lounge has a wood burner and lots of sunlight. The upstairs rooms offer views among the trees and there is a modern bathroom with a bath tub and shower. The upstairs bedrooms include one with a double memory foam mattress and a children's room with 1 high bunk bed and 1 double bed - both have wooden floors and sheepskin rugs.

Who we are

  1. We are a family of 4 with two girls aged 11 and 8. Michelle is the director of a social enterprise supporting parents and Michael is a life coach and facilitator. We don't smoke, we're very tidy and especially respectful of other people's space. We travel light and feel relaxed about sharing our lovely home with people who would like to enjoy this special area.

We are open to looking after other people's pets! We have 4 chickens which need very little looking after but you can enjoy their eggs! We have a very sweet small dog who goes to her favourite dog hotel when we travel!

We love the mountains in the summer. We are an active outdoorsy family loving swimming, hiking, skiing and adventure!

We've done 3 exchanges before - Norway, Spain and Germany and they were all terrific (this photo is from our visit to the salt mines in the Bavarian alps!)

  2. Michelle runs a Social Enterprise supporting parents and Michael is a life coach.

  3. We love the outdoors, animals, nature and wild swimming!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The house was built in 1950 and is in a very friendly peaceful neighbourhood just 50 yards from the The Cott Inn (700 years old thatched inn voted number 8 pub in England!) . We are few minutes walk to the post office, shop and the charming Cider Press shopping area with Cranks vegetarian restaurant (part of the Dartington Hall Trust estate). Dartington Hall is close by with stunning gardens to explore, the Barn Cinema, International Music Summer School and restaurants. https://www.dartington.org

Totnes is 4 minutes drive away or 20 minutes on the scenic cycle path. Totnes has a castle, an incredible selection of wonderful unique independent shops, more Grade 2 listed buildings than any other English high street and a fabulous Friday market. There is also a monthly Good Food market on a Sunday - it is a thriving and beautiful town with great night life, riverside eating and local music..

The atmospheric South Devon Steam Railway can be reached in 15 minutes by bike and we hear the toot of the train from our garden! At each end of the train line there are the attractions of the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm and the Butterflies & Otters Sanctuary.

A few miles beyond Totnes you'll find the wild and natural beaches around Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Salcombe. The beach at Bantham (30 minutes drive) was voted number 6 beach in Europe by Lonely Planet.

20 minutes drive brings you to the English Riviera with Torquay (voted top seaside destination in 2015 by TripAdvisor) and the coastal fishing port of Brixham with opportunities for fishing and boat hire along the coast with its many geological gems. Torquay has a popular wave pool with slide and is a few minutes from the quaint thatched village of Cockington where you can take a horse and carriage ride and enjoy a cream tea!

Going in the direction of Dartmoor from our house you'll come to the lovely town of Ashburton with its many antique shops and you can be at Haytor or Widecombe-on-the-Moor in less than 30 minutes drive. Dartmoor is a wild and stunning landscape with wild ponies (which are very friendly!) and quaint pubs as well as rivers to swim in. The River Dart Country Park is just outside Ashburton offering lots of adventurous fun for youngsters.

Plymouth (with the National Marine Aquarium) and Exeter (with it's cathedral) are both 35 minutes drive from the house. Both vibrant cities with theatre and urban delights.
