Our home

Our home is a four bedroom (we will be using one bedroom for storage of spare clothing etc), modern (1973 built recently refurbished and re-equipped), brick built detached house. It stands in a very quiet cul-de-sac on the northern edge of the village of Cuckfield. There is an en-suite shower room to the master bedroom with a second bathroom off the landing serving the other bedrooms. Downstairs comprises a fully equipped kitchen, lounge with a leather suite (with three reclining seats), separate dining room, downstairs cloak room/toilet (with washer, dryer and second freezer housed in a cupboarded area therein) and long entrance hall. The dining room has sliding doors which give access to the enclosed, small but attractive established rear garden with a raised patio and summer house containing garden furniture.

Who we are

  1. We are Eileen and Jim.We are both in our mid 70s and are retired teachers with three, now very grown-up, children We enjoy reading, dining with friends (at home and in restaurants) and visiting theatres. We also enjoy concerts, museums, galleries, gardens and places of historic interest as well as travelling both in the UK and overseas. Eileen is a painter (her website is EileenKnight.org.uk) whilst Jim is an enthusiastic actor and director with local amateur theatre groups. We sometimes travel with our 2 (40 plus year old) twin daughters, or with a widowed friend of ours - hence the figure 4 against the possible number of travellers shown above. Our next exchange will be our sventh and we have enjoyed everyone of the previous six.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Cuckfield is one of the prettiest villages in Sussex (if not in the whole of England!). It overlooks the beautiful South Downs (England's latest National Park and previously designated an area of oustanding natural beauty). Yet we are only 14 miles north of the English south coast at Brighton, 47 minutes by train from London and 90 minutes by road from Dover and the fast crossings (by sea or car/train tunnel) to the European mainland. The immediate environs abound in well-marked public walks through ancient woodland, fields or the open downland either directly from the house or via a short car ride. Also nearby are many National Trust gardens (e.g we are 10 minutes from Wakehurst Place the country base of Kew gardens and home of the National Seed bank). These also provide excellent and interesting walks amid superb floral and landscaped surroundings. Immediate shopping/recreation needs can be met within a five minute walk to the nearest local store/post office and pub, with the village centre (three further pubs and an excellent, MIchelin star, restaurant, a local bakery and other shops) just 15 minutes away on foot. Fast mainline trains to London, Brighton and other south coast resorts such as Eastbourne, Worthing and Littlehampton. run from the station at Haywards Heath (which by car is five minutes from the house) not less than three times an hour throughout the day. Gatwick (20 minutes) is our nearest airport with Heathrow 70 minutes away.
