Our home

Our flat is a large (2,200 sq ft) open plan loft on the top floors of the former Dr Scholl Shoe Factory in Clerkenwell, London. Our flat was chosen to participate in London Open House. We can sleep 6, two in a bedroom, two in a day room and two in a TV area. We have a living room, 3 bathrooms, a dedicated utility room, and a fully equipped large kitchen, with 2 full sized ovens, 4 gas hobs, and 2 induction hobs. We also have a day room, an office area with WiFi connection and printer, a TV area, a ceramics studio, and two terraces, with views over London, from the Gherkin to the east to the Post Office Tower to the west. The flat was newly created from a loft shell in 2000. We have a cleaning lady who comes in once a week. Transport facilities (tube, bus and main line stations) are all within easy reach. We have a wide range of books, CDs and DVDs which would be at your disposal.

Property features

Who we are

  1. We are a couple in our mid-60's. Sandy is an American and is a ceramic artist (which is why we have a ceramics studio is the flat). Arnold is British, a lawyer in the software industry. Our children live in Stockholm and Los Angeles respectively, and we have a new granddaughter in Stockholm. We have spent many happy weeks in New York and love to visit. We like travel, go to theatre, music, reading, and art. We need to be in New York for a conference on March 10, so timing for our first exchange needs to be around that date.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live in Clerkenwell, which is a very old area of London. Smithfield Market, still a working meat market, where Wat Tyler, leader of the Peasants' revolt in 1381, met his death (http://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/England-History/WatTyler.htm), is nearby. St Bartholomew's Hospital ("Barts"), one of the oldest hospitals in London, is a short walk away. You can walk from our flat to St. Paul's Cathedral, and then over the Millennium Bridge, to Tate Modern. There are many restaurants in the area, and we are also close to Islington, a vibrant area full of restaurants and shops, as well as fringe theatres such as the Almeida, the Old Red Lion and the King's Head. Very nearby is Sadlers Wells, a premier ballet venue. It is easy to get to the National Theatre, as well as West End theatres. Wigmore Hall is a wonderful concert hall for chamber music, as is the brand new King's Place. The Festival Hall is close to the National Theatre. Most places are a walk away, but transport is easy ? three tube lines run from our nearest station, Farringon, and another from Angel, Islington. Buses run nearby and it is easy to get taxis.
