Our home

I bought what is now Swan Lodge in 2012, when it was virtually derelict. Over the past hundred years or so it had been the store rooms of a pub, part of a 1950s petrol station, a Boy Scout clubhouse, and the village art gallery. I had it converted to my own design - and I absolutely love it.
There is one bedroom (with a super-kingsize bed, and a sofa bed in a separate room (my study) which is only really good for a child or two, maybe.
Swan Lodge is in the middle of the village of Bunbury in south-west Cheshire, not far from Shropshire to the south and Wales (Clwyd) to the west. The international airports of Manchester and Liverpool are less than an hour's drive away, and London can be reached in 95 minutes from Crewe station (a 25 minute drive).
This is very lush, wealthy countryside, and is wonderful for walking (especially along the late-Eighteenth century canals), cycling and horse riding. There are any number of terrific country pubs (no fewer than three within easy walking distance), as well as several good restaurants.
Unusually for modern England most of the land around here is still owned by very long-established great country estates, and there are several stately homes (not all open to the public, though the grounds and gardens often are). There are four castles within a five mile radius!
It's not a part of England that attracts many tourists, despite its beauty and tranquility.

Who we are

  1. I am a retired publisher of motorcycle magazines; I now write magazine features and work as archivist and historical researcher for a 900 year-old country house not far away. We undertook several holiday exchanges over the years (via this site) with out second home in Ireland - though this now has a full-time tenant. Swan Lodge is my main home.

Your neighbourhood

Bunbury is a village of only 1,000 people but has three pubs,a small supermarket, a family-run butchers and deli, an ancient church, and a children's play ground and playing field. It's a very friendly village, set between two A-roads, so there is only local traffic in the village.
Tarporley, three miles away, is a historic market town, with great architecture. It has several tea shops, a chocolatier, many independent shops, an old coaching inn, and a large number of smart ladies' clothing shops. It's an English High Street at its best.
About 25 minutes drive away is the Elizabethen town of Nantwich. The Roman city of Chester is about 35 miles away, as its world-famous zoo and rare animal breeding centre. Chester is great for sight-seeing, eating and drinking, and shopping. The equally historic city of Shrewsbury is about 45 minutes drive away.
Not far away is an 'ice cream farm' which is a big local attraction and great for children, and a glorious farm shop and tea shop. The race track of Oulton Park is five miles away or so, as are the Tarporley polo grounds.
Beeston Castle, dating from Norman times, is set on a high escarpment about five miles away, and is owned by English Heritage. Facing it is the Victorian castle of Peckforton, now a hotel, set in dense ancient woodland, and is where the Kevin Costnor Robin Hood movie was filmed.
The local canal system is one of the oldest in Britain, and has been beautifully restored. Lovely for long walks and bird watching.
