Our home

Our home was originally built as a Calvanist Chapel in 1904 and was used as a chapel for local residents up until the 1970's. In the 80's the chapel was converted into two townhouses; ours comprises the part which accommodated the pulpit and altar! The house is located on 3 levels and may be described as 'quirky'. It also has a 'Tardis' feel about it as it is bigger than what it appears from the outside. As lovers of travel and other cultures there are some themed rooms such as a 50's North American kitchen, the Oriental bedroom and North African lounge/dining room. The 1st floor accommodates two double bedrooms comprising the master bedroom and child's bedroom (which can accommodate two children)and the main bathroom. The ground floor comprises a kitchen and lounge/dining room. The basement accommodates a further double bedroom that has a bunk bed (double and a single) for 2 teenagers/adults (ideal for teenagers as it is also soundproof!)The floor also includes an en-suite, dressing room and laundry facilities. There is a small town garden which can be accessed via the basement bedroom and the ground floor lounge (balcony and steps down into the garden).

Who we are

  1. Hello! We are Jo and Jay, a married couple with one 5 year old son. We are both professionals (Occupational Therapist for Social Services and Licensing Manager for Local Government)and enjoy travelling and experiencing novel things to do. We both enjoy keeping fit which is part of our regular routine. Access to a gym would be fantastic. We both love outdoor sports (Jay is a qualified Scuba Diver)and I love music and have just started learning how to play the guitar. We have not done a home exchange before but are keen to try what sounds a great way to experience another country - and allow someone to see ours. We would like to arrange an exchange some way in advance in order to get to know our fellow ex-changers via email first to see how best we can facilitate their stay in the UK.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live in a small town (Newhaven)on the South Coast of England. Everything you need (grocery store, chemist, library etc)is within walking distance. The swimming pool is also only 5 mins walk away. The location of the town is perfect as a base to explore the South of England with great transport links via road and rail. Our home is 50 miles away from London which can be accessed via train (the railway station that is a 10 minute walk away!). There is also a Ferry terminal 10 minutes walk from our home which leaves daily for France. The journey to Dieppe takes about 4 hours.

10 miles to the West is the bustle of cosmopolitan Brighton that boasts great restaurants, clubs, theaters, the pier, shopping and pubs! Brighton is a bohemian town with a lot of things to do! 10 miles to the North is the historic medieval town of Lewes that is steeped in Tudor history.
10 miles to the East is Eastbourne that is laid back and has great vista over the sea at Beachy Head.

South Downs National Park surrounds us if you want some space.

We are lucky to have lovely neighbours and there is a real sense of community!

You would also have access to trusted and accredited/registered childminders who live on the same street too if you want some free time to explore the Brighton nightlife!

You would have access to a car (if required)and if we could assist you further in making your stay as pleasurable and hassle-free as possible then please do let us know In exchange we would prefer to have access to a car. Jay has a track record of 9 years of no claims so your car would be safe with us.

Lonely Planet has rated Brighton as one of the top 10 best city beaches in the world: 'Brighton is the most vibrant seaside resort in England. Just an hour from London, it is a thriving, cosmopolitan city with a Bohemian spirit; home to an exuberant gay community, a dynamic student population and a healthy number of ageing and new-age hippies, as well as traditional candyfloss fun. The beach is made up of pebbles, not sand, but that doesn't stop the crowds heading here in their droves. Whether it’s midday sunbathing or midnight partying, Brighton beach seems to be in use at all times'. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/spain/barcelona/travel-tips-and-articles/76442 Accessed on: 07.12.2012
