Our home

Church Cottage is a semi-detached Victorian cottage dating from 1840 that sits snugly in a village hamlet, in beautiful, quiet, typically English countryside. It is 1 hour to London by train. We have lovingly restored Church Cottage over the past 5 years and there are still small jobs we need to complete! It has an open plan living and dining area with a large kitchen. As well as there being a wood-burning stove in the living room, we also have a working open fire place in the dining room which joins a large kitchen, warmed by underfloor heating. Upstairs there are 3 bedrooms. The main bedroom has a King-sized bed, the second bedroom has a double bed and in the third bedroom, there are 2 single fold out beds. The garden is south facing and is walled on two sides. We have a veggie patch at the bottom of the garden, from which you can hear the church bells whilst sitting on the bench. There is also a wooden garden room with a log burner in which you can sit cosily and enjoy the garden.

Who we are

  1. Mark and I are in our mid 30s and we have a son who is 3 and a 1 year old daughter. Mark is a History teacher at a local secondary school and I recently left teaching to be a mum and work on the family strawberry farm which is only 20 minutes away. We love to travel and we have done four great exchanges so far. As Mark is a teacher, we are tied down to school holidays but we are potentially able to offer non-simultaneous exchanges if you wish to visit in our school term times.
We currently have this house on the market and we will be moving into a barn conversion on the strawberry farm in September. It's bigger, better and brand new and only 15 minutes from this location! We'll offer the barn as an exchange after September. Photos to come when building work has finished.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The cottage is across the road from a 12th century church and is on the edge of the famous Dedham Vale, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Dedham Vale is where one of England's most famous painters, John Constable, lived and painted, and the Vale is full of quaint English villages such as Dedham, Nayland and Boxford. If you like walking or cycling then there are lots of beautiful trails which you can take, with many taking you via some of the area's best country pubs. Even though it sits in a rural location, the house is only a 10 minute drive from Colchester, the UK's oldest recorded town and a vibrant, bustling university town. From Colchester, it is a 50 minute train ride to London, making it easy for day trips to all of London's tourist attractions. The house would also make a good base for the Rugby World Cup in Late 2015. Other famous places within easy reach include Cambridge - 1 hour, and Lavenham - 30 minutes. It is also just half an hour to the English coast, with Aldeburgh and Mersea nationally famous for their Fish & Chips and Oysters respectively.
