Our home

Our home is a 17th C sandstone cottage where we have lived (and renovated) for over 40 years.

On the ground floor the front door opens into a dining room with a little staircase leading up to bedroom 2, a cosy room with a double bed and views over the garden and fields.

From the dining room you enter a large living room with 2 sofas, armchairs, multi fuel stove, TV, hifi etc. The kitchen has all the appliances you need, plus a table for casual meals and opens into a small conservatory overlooking the garden. It has often been said our house is like a tardis, and still on the ground floor, a small hall from the living room takes you to a downstairs bathroom, newly refurbished this year, with a shower over the bath, hand basin and WC.

The main staircase takes you to the 3 bedrooms on the second floor. Bedroom 1 & 2 are doubles which share (or not!) a "Jack & Jill" ensuite shower room. Bedroom 3 has 2 full size single beds, one of which is at a higher level, great fun for kids! We have some toys, books and lego, travel cot, stairgate etc if needed.

Outside are gardens front, side and rear with wonderful views over the Pennine hills. There is a small summer house, bikes, and a hot tub for sunny days.

Who we are

  1. We are John,75, and Marilyn, 71.

We have been home exchanging for over 40 years (over 100 swaps) although we are new to this site we consider ourselves experienced exchangers as are our family who often like to travel with us.

We take great care of the homes we are privileged to share and make our guests as welcome here. Maps and tourist leaflets will be left for you together with a house manual to smooth your stay and a fridge stocked with necessities to start your holiday. If there is anything else you need to make your stay more comfortable just let us know.

Our summer holiday this year will probably be in August and some family members would like to join us for part of our stay, with our hosts permission of course.

If our details tempt you please contact us so that we can discuss in more depth and provide more `photos and information you may need.

Thank you for looking, Marilyn & John.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live in a tiny village, 2 miles from Appleby, the nearest town, so a car is essential.

There are great walks right from our door for days when you don`t want to travel but for excursions you could not be better situated.

To the west lies the Lake District National Park, to the East the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Appleby lies on the scenic Settle-Carlisle Railway so you can explore the Dales with ease in one direction via the Ribblehead Viaduct, or Carlisle in the other, with its castle, cathedral, Tullie house museum and great shopping.

Hadrian`s Wall is a wonderful day out either by car or train/bus.....discover the museums and excavations from the Roman occupation of Britain.

Have a day out in wonderful York, walk the walls, visit the (free) National Railway museum, and discover the history of the Viking occupation of Britain!

If you want to visit Scotland, look no further! It takes 45 minutes to reach the Border by car and if you want to see Glasgow or Edinburgh it takes just over an hour by train from Carlisle.
