Our home

It's a recent house, which was built in 2000 over 3 levels, two of which with a balcony. It includes a studio which can be used as an extra bedroom. It provides cool air in the hot summer. The house faces south, has lots of light in the living room and the view is superb. It has as all the modern appliances you can think of, speedy wifi, with a computer (Apple) at your disposal if necessary (we take a laptop when travelling), Tv has a zillion channels (in lots of languages, at least ten British channels), we also have a ping pong table, darts, pétanque boules and a pool room.

The bedrooms are not extremely spacious, but quite comfortable with nordic sheets and duvet. We have 2 TVs, and the house will have a lavish box at your disposal, with maps and flyers of things to do in the area, which is rich and diverse: nature walks, sports & fun, lakes and culture galore. All of which I can complete and develop at length on request... We also have a fairly decent collection of CDs and DVDs, which can be of use in times of rainy days...

The most interesting thing about our house is probably its view over the Orbe gorge, and the medieval town itself with its 3 towers. We have a 1/4 acre of land which provides a nice garden with a badmington/volley-ball area, a stone lounge for cool summer evening cocktails and grillades outside.

Who we are

  1. Our names are, Patrice Lefrançois (66 now, I'm afraid...) and Anne-Murielle Bovay (53). We have two daughters, Isaline, aged 22 and Lauranne, 25. We are both in the teaching profession (although the male part has partly retired now), which means that there are quite a few books to discover around the house for those who like reading.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The town itself is quite picturesque, it was built at the top of a hill, overlooking a sharp bend of the Orbe river, it is about to reach the mark of 7000 inhabitants and goes back to the Romans (Nicest mosaics north on the Alps to be seen, 20 minutes walk from the house). You can smell wafts of chocolate odeurs from the local Nestlé factory on the other side of town. It offers 3 supermarkets, one of which is very cheap, "Aldi", and one of them ("Coop") is 2 minutes away from the house. It's located only 2 minutes from the motorway, which puts us 30' from Lausanne and at a reasonable distance from most of Switzerland's major cities, Zurich, Lucerne, Basel, and of course Geneva (80 kms away on the motorway). This last bit also means that the airport is 45-50 minutes from our house on a good day when the traffic is ok...

What we enjoy about this area is that it offers fantastic quality of life, picturesque post-cardlike scenery with lots of cultural venues of all types, museums, cinemas (even in Orbe), theaters, amphitheaters and festivals, and, as mentioned further up, the most interesting Roman mosaics north of the Alps, for example. But also magic looking, cathedral-like Jura caves, romantic walks, and if you want a nice fondue, you can drive up the mountain, 20 minutes from the house, and sit at a chalet de montagne table, and enjoy our local alpage food. Yummy stuff at very affordable prices!

There are many children theme parks too, and zoos, especially one offering tropical domes, with tropical butterflies, flora and fauna, 40 minutes away. If you want to stay at home because the weather is inclement, we also have a variety of family games...

The weather in Summer is usually dry and hot, but some may not be "as equal as others"... It does vary a bit from year to year, but we trust our home can provide an excellent vacation port of call, if you are looking for a change of pace as well as discovering superb cultural venues and gorgeous natural spots.

For those who love to move a bit... Lyon is 3h away by car, so is Paris by TGV. Other than that Italy and Germany are not that far either (at least to American standards). But most of all Orbe, is very close to the Jura range (15') and the Alps (1hour), 4 major lakes, some that you can bike around on very flat roads. There are lots of hiking trails and beautiful mountain train rides to enjoy, with especially the Lavaux vineyards which is now a UNESCO landmark of breathtaking beauty, overlooking Lake Geneva. That said, the Neuchâtel lake is quite beautifuul too...
