Our home

Our house is a traditional village house, which we have restored in typical Alpujarran style with beamed ceilings, white walls and terracotta tiled floors. We have tried to combine rustic simplicity with modern convenience and comfort. There are 3 double bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. The dining kitchen is on the first floor, and leads to a balcony with table and chairs, overlooking the garden and the mountains all the way to the distant Mediterranean. The living room has TV, DVD, and a log stove. The kitchen is very well equipped, and has a log stove, dishwasher, microwave. It provides an atmospheric dining space with moorish lamps under the beamed ceiling.

The garden has a lawn, lots of flowers, vines and succulent plants, a shady summerhouse, a barbecue patio and a fruit orchard including figs, peaches, nectarines, pomegranates, almonds and olives. And the view is stupendous. We are 1100 metres above sea level, facing south to the Mediterranean. The view just rolls away before you, and gives you a great sense of space and peace.

You can go for stunning walks directly from the house. The long distance Gr7 footpath which crosses all southern Europe, passes behind the village. There are many more great walks without having to travel far.

This house offers peace, birdsong, the astounding view, and the privilege of sharing, if only on the edges, the way of life of deepest rural Spain.

Who we are

  1. We are Chris and Julia Whittaker, and we bought this house to have a home near our daughter and her family who live in the next village, Mairena. They run a small hotel and restaurant, Las Chimeneas (check it out on Tripadvisor). They are always available to offer advice on walks or to help with any queries.

When we are not in Spain, we live in York, UK, where we also have children and grandchildren. We are retired and enjoy our family and travelling to see our far-flung friends. We have done four exchanges over the last couple of years, and they have all worked brilliantly. We are always on the lookout for another trip.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Jubar is a tiny, quiet pueblo blanco where traditional farming with mules is still practiced. The villagers tend their terraces, and grow their own food. It is a great spot for walkers, artists, birdwatchers and lovers of nature. The bread van comes every day and the fish van twice a week, and they hoot so you can't miss them.

Our nearest restaurant is in Mairena, just 1km down the road. Mairena also has a bar where, like all bars in this area, free tapa is served with drinks. Also, Laroles, 10 mins drive away, has restaurants and bars, supermarket, pharmacy, bakery, bank and swimming pool. And Ugijar, 20 mins away, is a small town with fortnightly markets and a wide range of shops and services. All the nearby villages are interesting to visit, including Yegen, made famous by Gerald Brennan, friend of the Bloomsbury Group, and Trevelez, the highest village in Spain, famous for its air-dried jamon.

Granada is definitely worth a visit and is only an hour's drive away. Don't miss the famous Alhambra Palace. The coastal resort of Almerimar is also about an hour away, with beaches, water sports, fishing, marina, and seafood restaurants.
