We feel our detached, triangular house gives us the best of both worlds. While it lies in a quiet road amid some breathtaking mountain scenery, we are just 40 minutes' drive away from the verve and excitement of Madrid.
The Spanish capital needs no introduction, being packed with artistic, cultural and sporting pleasures from the Prado Museum to Real Madrid, not to mention the vibrancy of its famous night life.
Yet not so far away, we can enjoy relaxation, marvellous walks and peace.
(If you prefer not to drive to Madrid, there is the regular 691 bus service, with the stop just a couple of minutes' walk from the house. It arrives in Moncloa, a comfortable district and location of the Prime Minister's residential complex.)
We are 15 minutes' walk from the village of Becerril de la Sierra although you may choose to use our bike for a gentle ride to pick up the bread in the morning.
This spacious house was built some eight years ago on two floors. We bought it four years ago and are progressively making improvements. It has four bedrooms and can easily house six people although several of our children's friends have chosen to make use of the two large terraces for their snoozes on warm nights!
A word about the weather. Madrid can sizzle in the summer but we are blessed with a slightly kinder climate, with daytime temperatures several degrees lower and we often enjoy a refreshing night-time breeze. We have yet to install a pool but the village sports centre has good open-air swimming facilities while a 20-minute drive will take you to the village of Cercedilla and its spectacular natural pool which is set in gorgeous forestry.
Our kitchen is well-equipped and of reasonable size, with cooker, washing machine and drier, dishwasher, microwave etc. I am a keen music and film fan and have nearly a thousand CDs and a large DVD collection, as well as a piano and various guitars. We also subscribe to Canal Plus satellite TV, which has an excellent news service including BBC World, CNN, Sky News, France 24 channels etc. and allows most programmes and movies to be seen in original version.
Our garden has a ping -pong table with good-quality bats as well as a wooden dining table with four reclining chairs, a lovely place for enjoying a nightcap!
Stephen, a freelance translator from Manchester who has lived in Spain for 26 years, and Rosina, a secondary school English teacher in the nearby town of Alpedrete. Our daughter, Evie, 18, has now left home to study at Madrid Complutense University while our son, Frankie, 15, attends the same school as his mother (although mercifully, he says, not her classes!)
We had our first house exchange in the Netherlands two years ago and loved every minute. It goes without saying that we are responsible people who will treat the property of others with the care and attention it deserves.
Becerril, usually quiet but a little busier in the summer, is a friendly village with a couple of good restaurants together with bars, pizzerias, supermarket, newsagent, bakery, library, medical centre, hairdressers, sports centre etc.
A couple of miles away is the picturesque town of Navacerrada, which overlooks the reservoir (pictured) and acts as a magnet for day-trippers from Madrid at the weekend. (A ski resort of the same name is a few miles further up.) A stroll around the reservoir takes around an hour but determined hikers can enjoy many more challenging mountain treks in the vicinity.
Cross over the mountains in a spectacular 45-minute drive to Segovia, a definitive Spanish jewel whose assets include the wondrous 2000-year-old Roman Aqueduct and the delightful castle.
About 30 minutes' drive south-east from our home is giant, dramatic El Escorial, the monastery-palace built by Philip II which is one of Spain's most visited landmarks. Further west is the walled city of Ávila, birthplace of St Teresa which receives a host of pilgrims each year. Travel on to reach the elegant town of Salamanca or bypass Madrid to visit historic Toledo, made famous by the paintings of El Greco.
