Our home

Our spacious 130m2 (including terrace with table for dining al fresco) apartment, located in the heart of Barcelona, is beautiful, convenient and very well-equipped. It has three bedrooms that sleep a total of six: a master bedroom with a queen bed and two kids rooms, one with a single bed, and a second with an elevated single bunk and a futon underneath that sleeps two. An additional portable crib AND cot available are also available. There are two bathrooms (bath shower combination in one, shower in another), an extremely large kitchen, a light and airy living area and balconies on each side. Our front balcony overlooks a lovely plaza complete with palm trees and parrots; we have brunch on this balcony on sunny winter weekends. Our back terrace looks over a quiet courtyard; we have dinner on this terrace most summer evenings. Our apartment building is full of Eixample charm with its turn-of-the-century architecture, but the apartment itself was newly remodeled just prior to our moving in in 2004.

Who we are

  1. We are a couple from the San Francisco Bay area with 11 year old daughter and a 7 year old son both born here in Barcelona -- 2 Catalans! Tyler is a Bioinformaticist and I am a freelance tech consultant although I worked for many years as a Project Manager in the Silicon Valley and the Spanish National Supercomputing Center. We are both Stanford alumni, but Tyler completed his Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. We lived for several years in Japan and are well-traveled in general. We have been in Barcelona for more than 15 years and have shared our home with families from Amsterdam, San Francisco and Paris (4 exchanges to Paris alone). We look forward to telling you what our lovely adopted city has to offer. We believe that good food and good wine are essential to a good vacation. When we are not enjoying a splendid meal in one of our usual haunts, we love to hit the markets to buy fresh produce, breads and cheeses in order to cook up a feast. We are extremely neat and hope to leave your apartment cleaner than you have left it for us.

  2. We are always looking for 10 days - 3 weeks in Paris near the Luxembourg Gardens preferably in August (preferably including 15 Aug). We have exchanged with Parisiens many times and are happy to provide references.

We also try to get away to the French countryside in summer and prefer a house with a pool and a barbecue.

We also are always looking for a 1-3 week exchange to San Francisco or San Diego during the Christmas / New Year holiday and or summer. We appreciate occasional short exchanges for long weekends (when we go to conferences or just quick trips to great cities) and are interested in an exchange for Easter 2014 although we are not sure where... but we love Istambul, Marrakech, Rome, Lisboa, London as long as we are walking distance from city action. Generally if you have an offer for the U.S. or Canada, please keep in mind that we usually won't look anywhere but the West Coast to be closer to our family in California (northern and southern).

  3. We are sometimes slow to respond to an offer, but we receive so many that it is not always possible. We do try to respond to any offer of interest (that fits our schedule) within a week. Thank you for understanding. Also while we may not be interested in your offer one year, we might be the next - so don't give up on us. We do love to exchange!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live in the Barcelona city CENTER, 5 minutes walking distance to Casa Batlló by Gaudí (Passeig de Gràcia / Aragó), 10 mins walking to La Rambla. Our neighborhood is safe and family-friendly. We live on a small plaza (in French "place") that has 2 playgrounds for children (age 1.5 - 6). You will find couples and families enjoying the summer evening stroll around 7:30pm on the nearby high-end shopping street, Rambla Catalunya (not to be confused with La Rambla). In our neighborhood, there many nice restaurants and cafés with outdoor seating - some which serve food all day - which is helpful for families. There is a very nice aquarium here and a zoo, and in a 15 minute taxi ride or a 20 minute bus ride, you will be at Barceloneta beach which is great place to take young children to play in the sand. For a dip in the Mediterranean, we are a 10 minute walk from the train station, from which you can go to Sitges beach which is perfect for families in 30 minutes or to the Costa Brava in about 1 hour. We are served by 6 metro/train lines and more bus lines than I can list. The local buses take all types of baby cars/strollers and are a wonderful way to take in the sights of the city. However, it's likely that you'll never need to use any of these considering this prime location.

Best restaurants
We will provide a complete list depending on time of year (as there are annual August and Winter closings).
