Our home

Our home is in the center of historical Sighet and is situated in a large mature garden. The garden is very well maintained and blossoms in ths spring and summer. The house is large and easily accommodates six with a large kitchen and living room area. There is also a veranda accessible from the kitchen. There is a WC downstairs and bathroom upstairs as well as three large bedrooms with large comfortable beds. The front bedroom has a nice veranda on which you can enjoy morning coffee.
In the garden is a traditional BBQ area and plenty of wood to fuel it. The area includes table and chairs so you are able to have supper and enjoy the garden in the evening warmth. Its a fabulous way to spend the evening plus there is always a little tuica (plumb brandy )available.
The house is some distance from the main road so quiet at all times.

Who we are

  1. My name is Rob I'm a social worker in Bristol (UK) where we live at the moment. My wife is Lia who is Romanian and a curtain maker/interior designer as well as an artist and mother. The third member of our group is our daughter Sarah who will be 12 this March.
We like to travel when we can but are restricted by school holidays like many others. The house we are offering as a swap belongs to us and we run as a back packers hostel for two months in the summer. We have been doing this for seven years now. Its great fun but we cant make a living out of it hence the need at the moment to live in the UK.
We are looking to swap during school holidays but it doesn't have to be simultaneous or even for the same amount of time.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

The house is a five minute walk from the town center where there is the main market which is a riot of colour and hustle in the spring and summer. There are shops and restaurants here as well as museums and coffee houses. The main train station is ten minutes walk away as is the bus station. From either you can reach the more rural areas of Maramures and some spectacular walking opportunities. If walking is not your thing each of the local villages has its own unique identity. Some to the east retain Ukrainian customs while to the east are Hungarian villages and in the Isa valley traditional Romanian villages with their wooden churches.
About sixteen km north is the village of Sapanta with its very famous Merry Cemetary.
My favourite local activity is walking in the hills above Sighet where the grass is still cut with scythes and horses and carts pass by regularly with thier mounds of hay. In the fields the locals welcome you often with a little alcohol or home made soup.
The other interesting activity is to cross into the Ukraine and take the salt baths just across the boarder apparently they cure all ills though that may be the vodka. Also across the boarder you can take a bus to the pretty Carpathian town of Rahiv.
In the winter ski-ing is available at Borsa and locally at Cavnic where usual facilities are available.
