Our home

I own a very nice two-level house in the small town of Hokksund, Norway. The house was completely refurbished in 2007-09, and is upgraded to a high standard. There are three good-sized bedrooms, one of which now functions as a library, but with the option of a spare bed. The kitchen is crème coloured and traditional, but completely modernized and with new appliances, worktops and underfloor heating, and with fridge, freezer, microwave/grill, oven, induction top, dishwasher, espresso machine and bread maker. The living/dining room is decent sized and has a great fireplace and parquet flooring. TV and DVD/VHS-player and cable TV. The 12 sqm bathroom has been completely modernised, and is now an excellent spa bath with underfloor heating, shower and separate bath. There is also a combined washing machine/dryer for visitors’ use.

Upstairs are two good-sized bedrooms and hall. The master bedroom has parquet flooring, a double sleighbed, chandelier and good floor space. The guest bedroom has a single sleighbed, a chair and table, as well as TV/DVD-player (not connected to cable TV).

The garden is decent-sized, and offers the option of harvesting strawberries, rhubarb, herbs and doing some gardening if you should feel like it. There is also a large veranda with garden furniture and a hammock, and very good sun-bathing conditions. Badminton rackets and net will be provided.

Summers in Norway tend to be very good, with temperatures in the 20s and lots of sun. The evenings are light and long. But there’s never any guarantee for the weather, I’m afraid.

I have quite a few English language books & DVDs available for use during your stay.

1 travel cot for babies, some toys.

Who we are

  1. I am a 37-year old Norwegian historian/project manager, specialising in 18th century English and Irish history and antiques, as well as the Viking age. I have worked in Norwegian museums for several years, as well as in the airline sector and as a teacher. I love travelling and look forward to some very interesting house swaps. I am well-organised, tidy and with an eye for cleanliness, and will take good care of your house while you are away. I am also interested in house-sitting assignments. I would be very happy to provide interior design and antiques advice, should you desire it (but will only do so if asked to!). Non-smoking.

Your neighbourhood

Hokksund has several cafes, interior design shops, supermarkets and a variety of shops that will cater for most needs. There’s even a wine monopoly/merchant, which is important in Norway! Set in a rural area, great walks are abundant, whether along the river, into the forest or through the lovely ancient cultural landscape. The nearby river (10 mins walk) is famous for excellent salmon fishing.

The house is located in a very quiet and nice neighbourhood, surrounded by gardens, with only a five-minute walk to the town centre. The train station is a four-minute walk, with direct trains to Drammen (20 mins), Kongsberg (25 mins), Oslo (55 mins), Oslo Airport Gardermoen (1 ½ hours), Bergen (ca 6 hours) and Stavanger (ca 7 hours). So it’s very easy to get around the area as well as further afield. Drammen is a reasonably large city with excellent shopping, a theatre, concerts, excellent river promenade, great restaurants and cafes, cinema, museums as well as a good tourist office. Kongsberg is also a lovely, historical city with lots to see and do. And of course, you can look forward to some really good days out in Oslo.

I will be very happy to provide information about good days out, what to do and see in the area and Oslo, and how to get around. There are for instance two lovely 18th century manor houses within short distance, Gulskogen gård (Gulskogen/Drammen) and Fossesholm Herregård (Vestfossen), which would be perfect for a good picnic. A picnic bag on wheels can be provided.

In the winter, there are two good downhill skiing facilities only 20-30 minutes away, in addition to lots of local cross-country tracks.
