Our home

Our modern large masonry plastered home with sea views is located in the quiet coastal village of Kuaotunu, situated on a hill surrounded by 1.6h (nearly 5 acres) of gardens and bush, criss-crossed with garden paths.
The house is tiled throughout, and filled with local art and sculptures. It offers an open plan lounge/dining/kitchen/family area with views over the bay up the Coromandel Peninsula. Bi-fold timber doors lead out to the covered loggia, a great location for a long lunch or to appreciate the wonderful sunsets before a BBQ in front of the chiminia.
The kitchen is a "foodies" delight with gas hobs, 2 ovens and all mod cons, (expect no expresso machine as we prefer to wander down to the village and endulge in a divine "Coffee La La" which is locally roasted!)
The internal courtyard with water fountain has another 10 seater table setting, ideal for lazy brunches, listening to the extensive CD collection from the outdoor speakers.
The home is offered in two configurations: (Ground floor) 2 spacious guest rooms (queens-size beds) with french-doors leading out to terrace or courtyard, sharing a spacious tiled bathroom with seperate shower and bath. If another double bed is required we can offer (Second Level)our master-bedroom, ensuite (Shower, no bath), walk-in wardrobe and library.
The office is located on the Ground Floor and houses the computer, (wireless through house, photocopier, 2 x desks and conference table.
For the winter months we have a cozy dual sided fireplace and gas underfloor heating, but due to double glazing very little heating is required mid-season.
For extended stays, musicians could enjoy the music studio located off the courtyard with own bathroom/shower, by arrangement.
Down the driveway, past the fruit orchard you will find our Gym in the old boat shed, with weights, cross-trainer, rower etc. Many varieties of fruit, citrus and nut trees can be found on the property and there are always a variety of herbs and vegetables to be picked from the "walled garden" to enjoy with an abundance of fresh local produce.

Who we are

  1. We are a semi-retired childless couple who love our Dog first, then travel / music / art / food / gardening in equal amounts!
We enjoy walking / hiking, especially with our Dog, and exploring new terrain.
Brent focuses on music and the arts and loves France, whilst Lise is the foodie and photographer and adores markets and restuarants.
We are new to this exchange concept, but are hoping to travel with our Dog to Europe for a year, commencing sometime in 2014. We are hoping for a mixture of experiences in Alsace and Southern France for 9 months and then 3 months in the winter possibly somewhere warmer such as Sicily.
In the mean time if an exchange is offered for Oceania / South Asia we would consider it.

Your neighbourhood

We are located approximately 200km (2.5 - 3 hours drive) from the main cities of Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga. The Coromandel Peninsula is a playground for nature seekers, a mountainous forested outcrop fringed with clear water and stunning beaches. The drive south from Auckland Int. Airport then east to the base of the Peninsula takes 80mins through flat farmland to the historical gold town of Thames. From here you should prepare for one of the worlds most slendid coastal drives hugging the Firth of Thames, then over hilly pastoral and bush terrain to the township of Coromandel. Head further east to the other side of the ranges and you will arrive at Kuaotunu (pop. around 200). The crystal clear waters and white sandy beach offers spectacular north facing views of Mercury Island and Great Barrier. There is also a surf break on the eastern end, which, when swells permit offers a great ride (please keep this quiet!).
The sleepy village comprises of the local Community Hall (circa late 1800's), the Fire Station, local shop selling all basic needs, Blackjack Cafe (with great local art & crafts) and Luke's Kitchen (making fabulous pizza's and kumera chips!). Over the hill (Blackjack) is the breathtaking beach Otama, then Opito before the road ends at Matapaua.
The area is popular with fisherman and divers and the seafood is abundant. To the west the beaches of Matarangi (4km's of flat sand) and Golf Course, and Whangapoua: - Wade the stream, navigate the boulders and take the narrow dirt track hugging the bush clad high tide mark and you will walk thru a magical glade of Nikau's (the southern most palm) and find yourself on one of the worlds most beautiful beaches (Top 10!) - New Chums Beach. Surfers - take your boards!
Our closest town Whitianga (17km / 15 mins drive) pop 5000, has a supermarket, cinema, basic shops, cafes, hot spring spa and many restuarants of which 2 are highly recommended.
Take the Glass Bottom Boat out to Catheral Cove, hire a fishing guide, take a Dive Course, plan a sightseeing trip or a Canoe excursion. Perhaps pack a picnic and explore one of the dozens of bush walks / hikes or tramps that the region offers. Or simply walk along your own quiet beach and feel the magic! Visit
