Who we are

  1. Owner profile: Retired university teacher (Dugald) and retired bookstore owner(Shirley), both NZ-born, who reside in Christchurch, where exchangees can be accommodated en route to Fairlie. We are well-travelled and usually have two or three overseas trips a year; we have over the years lived for longer periods in the UK, the USA (Seattle) and Malaysia (Penang and Kota Kinabalu). Tidy housekeepers, non-smokers, and familiar with etiquette of exchanges. Possibility for car exchange of BMW 520 saloon.

Exchange preferences. We have contracted for all our exchange possibilities for 2007 (except incoming) (1) Relatives have recently moved to Perth. We'd like to visit there February, 2008. (2) We are currently building our other travel plans for 2008, which may mean another round-the-world venture, Asia, Europe, North America. Prefer non-simultaneous periods of about two weeks, and neither pet nor garden care to allow for limited local touring. We need only modest comfort.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Township profile: Fairlie, population 800, lies in the foothills (330m above sea level) and at the junction of the inland and coastal roads on main route to the nearby Mackenzie Basin and the Mt Cook National Park alpine area. Two hour’s drive (190 km or 114 miles) south of Christchurch, the major hub for the South Island. Fifty km (30 miles) west to Lake Tekapo township inland, and 63 km (38 miles)east to city of Timaru on the coast. Fairlie serves the wider rural community and tourist trade and is a picturesque mixture of the old and the new. Town has a medical centre, pharmacy (drugstore), police station, golf club (low green fees), tennis courts, 7-day supermarket, two pubs, an award-winning restaurant and several cafes. Easy access to trout fishing in a wide choice of lakes and rivers, three ski fields, hiking walks and all outdoor pursuits. Usually frosty in winter (May to August) but rarely snows in the township (June 2006 was an exception for intensity of snow dump).
