Our home

This became our retirement home in the paradise of the North Island of New Zealand after a career in high tech and horticulture in the Silicon Valley of California. Our home sits on a hillside above the village domain in Omokoroa, pop. now about 3,000. Tauranga, the nearest city, is only 25 minute drive. Our 180degree view of the yachts in the inner harbour, Mt. Maunganui, in the distance and the nearby islands is spectacular! Access is down a steep drive which makes the setting very private and peaceful. Although it is a single story home, the lounge view is at treetops which is allows an intimate look at the native bird life. The garden is terraced up behind the house and below. The pottager garden just steps out the door on the expansive deck.
Our home is only 3 yrs. old as it was rebuilt after a fire in 2013. We choose to make the third bedroom/bath into a detached guesthouse which is just steps across the breezeway with its own mini-kitchen and access to the BarBQ ,patio, and its own lovely view. The main home is open plan with a Master suite up a short stairwell, The main floor has second queen bedroom/bath, an expansive lounge, large dining area, full laundry and a gourmet kitchen with the best view in the house. The double garage has ample storage and just happens to have a ladies and mens set of golf clubs for use at the amazing course just 5 minutes away.

Who we are

  1. We are both retired now many years, myself from medical technology, and Sarath from early tech days of Silicon Valley. In the mid-70's he bought the neighborhood nursery and began second career in horticulture and landscaping . We are very active travelers, golfers, gardeners, and cooks. Our biggest joy is entertaining our friends and family with a lovely home-cooked meal. Our travels take us yearly to Australia, California, and Montana to see family and friends. Sarath was born in Sri Lanka so that is also a common destination. By virtue of our life-style, we have helped many people execute their dreams of a big trip to NZ or the States or Sri Lanka. We also enjoyed opening our home as a B & B for many years. We have also done several exchanges and have a reputation of excellent house-keeping.
We will be staying in the Silicon Valley for many months this year so would like the opportunity to share our home in an exchange situation. We will have our 3 yr. old terrier, Snoopy, with us. She is accustomed to 2 walks a day so is quite docile the rest of the time now that she is a "big girl". We are happy to care for your animals.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Omokoroa is a 5 km long peninsula just off State Hwy 2 between Katikati and Tauranga. The 5 km drive takes you through kiwi and avocado orchards and some remaining farmland, large life-style blocks, an 18 hole golf course, sports ground, tennis courts, new supermarket, and gardens. You pass through residential area and on down to the seaside where there is a wee beach store, a cafe, and the Boat Club and restaurant. The wharf is home for the ferry which travels many times daily to the small community on Matakana Island. There are 2 primary schools in Omokoroa, a medical clinic and pharmacy, hairdressers, a garage, library and real estate offices. It is all you ever need unless you want more shopping and nightlife which is only 17 km. away in Tauranga and Mt. Maunganui. Beside the sea view, the Kaimai range to the west provides lovely sunset photos of those mountains.
Locally we have lovely walks all around the peninsula, Hiking and biking opportunities abound in the whole area, and all over New Zealand. One of our favorite is Quarry Park Trails and Gardens only 10 km away. Bay of Plenty is just that...everything grows so there are beautiful gardens everywhere. The harbour is plentiful as well: snapper, kingfish, trevali, mussels, crayfish, flounder . The open sea is home to tuna and hapuka and the big guys.
When we arrived 20 yrs. ago, this was a sleepy place where everyone knew everyone. There has been good growth the last 5 yrs. so you will easily meet people from many different places, new to the village. Still, the ambiance is friendly & helpful in the Kiwi style!
