Our home

My house was built in the 1990's and is fairly typical of modern New Zealand homes. It has a large, open plan living/dining area and big windows which open into the garden. The deck and garden are very private and catch the sun for most of the day. The kitchen and bathrooms have recently been replaced so the house is quite modern. There are three bedrooms, one with a queen-size bed, one with a king single and one which set up as my office/study, where I can stare out of the floor-length windows watching the birds and pretending to do something constructive! A comfortable folding bed can be set up in the office/bedroom if required. My Toyota is available for exchange and seemed to enjoy being taken on a tour of the whole country by my last exchange partners!

Who we are

  1. Having been a teacher for 20 years, I (Gerry) emigrated to New Zealand in 2000 when I bought and ran a busy Bed & Breakfast (so I am accustomed to keeping things very clean and tidy). I "semi-retired" from that a while back and have settled into my quiet house with a gate leading into the park. I enjoy walking and socialising, and I play golf and lawn bowls, both of them badly. I now have several part-time jobs, most of which involve teaching adults. I have travelled quite extensively but I prefer to get to know one place well, rather than opting for tick-box tourism. I still work occasionally as a "locum" for other bed & breakfast owners, which means that my house is sometimes empty for extended periods and may be available for non-simultaneous exchanges. I have done many house-sits over the years and have had over 15 very successful exchanges in Italy, San Francisco, Tahiti, France, Thailand, Cairns, Adelaide, Perth and Coffs Harbour. I am sure any of them would be prepared to supply a recommendation if required.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Nelson is a small city in the north of New Zealand's south island. It is located on the coast, surrounded by hills and mountains. This geographical location is responsible for our micro-climate, making Nelson the sunniest spot in New Zealand. My house is in a quiet, residential area, 10 minutes walk from the city centre, with a gate from my garden leading into an open park, on the other side of which is the sea. The nearest beach for swimming is 10 minutes drive. Nelson is considered to be the artists' centre for the country, with many artists moving to the region to pursue their craft. We also have a thriving wine industry and several national parks with world famous walking trails within easy reach. Since the geographical centre point of the country (imaginatively named "The Centre of New Zealand") is less than a mile from my home, it makes a reasonable base from which to explore the delights of this scenic and unspoiled country.
