Our home

Our home was built in 2004 and we have really enjoyed living here since then. It is light & spacious and has proved adaptable for a wide range of family occasions. The garden is taking shape and complements the house with many different areas in which to relax. The middle level of the house is used by the two of us as our living area, but there are also 2 double bedroom and lounge areas both upstairs and downstairs with their own separate bathroom & toilet facilities. The house is set on about 2 1/2 acres and sheep or cows keep the grass tidy in the paddocks below the house.

Who we are

  1. I am now 68, a retired accountant by profession and I helped to build and complete the house. Now I have almost completed the garden. Moira, now 63, is a fluent French speaker and she retired from teaching that subject and English at the local Girls' High School in 2013. We are both British by birth and Kiwi by nationality. Both of us are pretty active and enjoy meeting people. We have lived in Whangarei for 37 years and both our children have grown up here. Before emigrating here, we travelled to many other countries. Both our children are settled in their own homes in NZ, and they also have holiday homes at Rotoiti (near Rotorua) and Hanmer Springs (S.I.) which may also be available for use. All of our exchanges have been an enjoyable experience and we now look forward to more.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Whangarei is the largest city in Northland, about a 3 hour drive north from Auckland airport. However, by world standards it is only a town with about 60,000 inhabitants. It has good services, hospital, shops, marina etc. and is a pleasant place to live. Our home is a 10 minute drive to the north of the city, elevated and looking north (towards the sun down here) out over farmland and bush/tree clad hills. The whole of Northland is easily accessible by way of day trips from Whangarei by car (there is hardly any public transport) and we would make a good place to stay for a while before moving south to visit the rest of New Zealand. The north has many varied beaches & forests with opportunities for fishing, diving, golf, hiking, kayaking or whatever interests you. Although we are a long way away, Northland has inhabitants from many parts of the world (we are English) and visitors are made welcome. Our climate is described as subtropical (bananas and citrus grow well here) and frosts are rare-maybe only once or twice in most years. In light of events over the last few years, it may be worth pointing out that our area, the Far North of NZ, is well away from the seismic fault line which runs through the far east of the country and life here has been unaffected by those earthquakes.
