Our home

Our holiday home/bach was built by my father in 1978 and has been enjoyed by our family in the years since. It is located in the heart of Hanmer Springs and within minutes you can access forest walks, village shops and cafes, the hills and the pool complex which features hot springs and cold water pools, hydroslides, restaurant and family picnic areas. It is a peaceful haven but also ideal for those who like trekking/tramping or mountain biking.

The house is sunny and warm in summer and cosy in the winter with a very efficient log burner.

Property features

Who we are

  1. We are a well-travelled New Zealand / English couple, wanting to spend a bit more time in England to maintain family connections and visit historical and beautiful places. Anne, formerly a project manager in the health sector, is now retired, and Howard is a self-employed information systems consultant.

We love the outdoors. Our favourite activities are hill walking and mountain biking. Howard, originally from Hampshire, UK, also likes boats and sea kayaking. We can do all of these activities within five minutes of our home.

We travel frequently, and appreciate the effort hosts go to in providing clean and comfortable accommodation. We are looking to exchange with like-minded people.

We designed and built our house in 2009. A bit like on Grand Designs, it was a labour of love, but every day we appreciate that the time and effort (and yes, money!) was totally worth it.

Our home is tucked down a private driveway on a hillside looking out to sea.

It is warm: well insulated with good heating systems, and it is full of light, with lots of large double glazed windows. As the sun tracks through the day there is always sunlight into the house. Because the master bedroom window faces east, we wake to a view of the sun rising out of the sea.

There are cliff walks in both directions. Turn right from our entrance and you head down the hill to Sumner village and coffee, restaurants and shops; turn left and you head to a surf beach and rocky coastline somewhat like the English Devon/Cornwall coast.

We have developed a garden of native trees and plants that encourage bird life. It really is a haven from a busy world.
