Our home

We are a mature couple with no longer kids or pets at home. We are a photographer/university lecturer and an art historian. Our home is is two storied and one of 24 town-houses which circle a large enclosed private garden out the back of the kitchen garden. Downstairs is a sitting room, and a sun room in front which funnels warm air through on cooler days. Next to the sitting room is the dining area where we also keep many books and the vinyl record collection. The dining table can seat eight. At back is a kitchen with all mod cons and a family /sitting area where folk tend to congregate. There is a good DVD/video collection as we are movie fans too. Downstairs also is a small but new bathroom with shower and there is a pantry/store-room off the large kitchen. In the courtyard out back is the laundry/garden room as well as the kitchen garden. We would be happy to plant up the small kitchen garden before leaving so there is fresh greens/tomatoes/ beans/strawberries etc for house sitters or can leave it fallow if preferred. There are also some vegetable plantings at the top of the large shared garden. The large shared garden is grassed and many trees including some fruit such as lemons, feijoas, plums and a mulberry. This garden is solely for those living in the 24 houses around and any guests have full access. In front of the house we have recently re-vamped the garden so sitting out there is pleasant and easy. All is paved so no lawns to mow. We have new plantings in raised beds that will, unfortunately still be small for a few years but there should at least be a few lemons, mandarins, figs and plenty of flowers!

Upstairs are two bedrooms (there is a third but that is converted to an office and will contain our personal stuff while away). One has a Queen and the other a double bed. There is a small other office with internet off the main bedroom and top of the stairs. There is another (larger and older) bathroom upstairs which has a bath as well as a shower over it.
In the sitting area by the dining/kitchen is a large couch that can double very well as a single bed if necessary.

It's a nice home, not grand but very comfortable and loads of art all over as well as many books, DVDs, music.... Internet can be received all over, not just the offices.

Who we are

  1. We are a mature couple with no longer kids or pets at home. We are a photographer/university lecturer and art historian. Living in New Zealand we are a long travel to go somewhere so look for a longer term stay of 1-2 months altogether (but based in 2/3 different places perhaps). This way we can get to really know an area well. Our summer holiday season (November-April) is a great time to visit New Zealand and we do not mind going somewhere cold, even snowy as we never get any here!(It never gets very hot or very cold in Auckland) So, if you fancy a sunny break in the middle of your northern hemisphere winter - try Auckland in the South Pacific!
We enjoy the arts and architecture and love to get into really big cities so as to saturate ourselves! We also enjoy very different cultures and consider a six week journey around Egypt a few years ago a real highlight. We have little interest in beach/holiday areas, as we have it at our doorstep, unless there is also a big city nearby to explore!. We travel to experience culture in all its variations.
We'd be happy to advance-book cheap flights to other parts of the country if you also wanted to see the South Island - recommended for some of the most gorgeous scenery anywhere!

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

Auckland, where we live, is the largest city in New Zealand. We live but fifteen minutes easy walk from its heart but it could be a hundred miles. The shared garden out back is large and a lovely place to sit around in summer (November - March) Many large shady trees, some fruit bearing. (We have plums, tamarillos, avocados, feijoas and lemons near us and there are more plums, loquats and mandarins and lemons further up as well as a huge Mulberry tree. The neighbours are friendly!
It is an easy 7 minute walk to a long trendy shopping/restaurant/boutique shops district (best area in the city for this) In the other direction it's only fifteen minutes to walk into the city for usual attractions like theatres/galleries/library etc. We are the nearest residential area outside the city centre where there are only apartments. There are several large parks and recreational areas in our near neighbourhood. The newly developed waterfront area has childrens' play area, cafes of many ethnicities and fish market beside the working fishing boat harbour and is a pleasant walk in to town. We are handy to major bus and ferry terminals and there are good local bus services near the house to take you to the city and terminals if you prefer not to walk. Harbour ferries can take you to historic areas, parks and walks or to the Islands of the Gulf. We offer our old but reliable car for use as desired and good beaches are but five minutes drive while great ones are 15 minutes to an hour and a bit away by car. Situated on a narrow isthmus, Auckland has golden sand, intimate East Coast beaches and sweeping, wild, black sand, surfing, West Coast beaches. Great walking and tramping in the areas at the edges of the city. We'd leave directions on how to get to any of these places of interest, of course.
There are several farmers markets on weekends for fresh produce and an excellent supermarket and food speciality markets etc all handy.
The ferry terminal will get you to Islands of the Gulf where some of New Zealand's best vineyards, olive groves and beaches are to be found and another vineyard area to the North-west is but 20 minutes drive.
