Our home

Our home is a 100 year old New Zealand villa (Edwardian Arts & Crafts style house) that we purchased in 2008 and have lovingly restored to its former glory.

There are four large bedrooms - three with built-in wardrobes, a separate living room, open plan kitchen and dining area, two bathrooms, a study and a hallway big enough to double as a bowling lane!

The house is built entirely of native New Zealand timber (Rimu and Matai) and we have carefully stripped and polished the timber architraves, doors, window frames and floors. Each room features beautiful, original lead lights.

Our house is located on a ridge with great views of the Manakau heads and the Waitakere ranges. In the evening you can watch the sun set over the mountains and the lights of the city twinkle below.

UPDATE 23 July 2011: we've arranged accommodation for our October trip to Europe. We'll update our profile when we're ready for the next holiday / house swap.

Who we are

  1. We're a family of five. Victor is an IT professional working in the banking industry. Kate is an archivist at the University of Auckland. We have three children: Hannah (15), Isabelle (12) and Josh (10).

We also have a black and white cat - Merlin, but can get a friend to look after him if pets are not your thing.

For some time we've been thinking about going on a family expedition to Europe. In New Zealand we're spoilt for choice when it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, but we'd like to balance this with experiencing the museums, galleries, ruins, history and general urban buzz that Europeans take for granted. Home exchange seems a fantastic way of making this actually happen. We're particularly keen on visiting the UK, where Kate is originally from and has relatives to visit, though we're open to suggestion.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live in in Mt Eden, a central Auckland suburb. We are a couple of minutes walk from Mt Eden Village which contains some great cafes, restaurants, pubs, books stores, opportunity stores and an art gallery.

From Mt Eden it's a one section bus fare - 10/15 minute trip to the CBD and the Viaduct (where you can catch ferries to explore the islands that dot Auckland's harbour).

For the sport fans, our home is about a 20 minute walk from Mt Eden Stadium where the key games of the Rugby World Cup will be played.

Venturing wider out, the Auckland region offers world class natural scenery and outdoor activities. The black sand surf beaches of the west coast (like Piha and Karekare) and the gold sand beaches of the east coast (like Tawharanui) are just over an hour's drive. The vinyards and farmer markets that surround Matakana are also about an hour away.
