Our home

Our house is a family house with 5 bedrooms and a garden with lots of privacy. The house is semi-detached, well isolated and modern-equipped (Wifi, two toilets, one bathroom, oven, washing machine, tumble dryer, and solar panels) The living-room is spacious and cosy.
We feel very comfortable at our home, nevertheless we like to go out and visit the rest of the world!
We don't own a car. We travel by public transport, bicycles and 2 scooters. Unfortunately the scooters can not be used by other people because of insurance-issues. 4 of our bicycles can be used, including a e-bike. Maybe you can use even more of our bicycles, it depends on how many children are travelling with us.
Since August 2017 we have a cat, named Juulke; he is very playful and easy with new people.

Who we are

  1. We are Dominique Beuken-Schmitz and Harrie Beuken.
Dominique was born in 1967, Harrie in 1957. We have four children; Laura, René, Jerome and Sophie.

Harrie is a graphic-worker at the regional-government; Dominique is a nurse for the mentally disabled. We both work in Maastricht.
Last but not least. We do not own a car. This could mean that you have to bring your own car; although that would not be necessary since we have a very good bus and train-network and an airport at about 20 km.
But it also means that we can only exchange houses with you when you live in a place which can be reached by public transport.
Looking forward to hear from you.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

To the south, Zuid-Limburg borders on the foothills of the Ardennes, High Fens and Eifel. This gives this region its character which is not typical for the Netherlands at all; the wide and gently rolling hills are in strong contrast with the otherwise flat Dutch landscape! The region is affectionately called "Little Switzerland". Also characteristic for the region is the yellow marl (a kind of sandstone) which rises to the surface here. Marlstone caves are found on a lot of places. This hilly region is valued for its numerous cycling and hiking routes!
The history of Limburg has been significantly influenced by the Dutch, Germans and the French and therefore can be regarded as a truly original European region, even way before the Maastricht Treaty. These influences are still reflected in for instance the Limburg cuisine and the regional buildings.

Some highlight places and regions:

Parkstad Limburg

The fastest growing tourist destination in the Netherlands. It has some of the finest Roman archaeological sites in the Netherlands, the largest indoor ski centre in the world (Snow world), the most innovative and modern Zoo in Europe (Gaia Park), one of the largest Castles in the Netherlands which is open to the public (Hoensbroek), the largest themed garden (Mondo Verde), a spectacular Museum (Columbus Earth Theater) which provides you the view of an astronaut, Thermenmuseum in Heerlen (a Roman Spa) , Kinderstad Heerlen, a large indoor playground, "Miljoenenlijn" a heritage steam railway, Festival Grounds megaland in Landgraaf (Pinkpop) , Climbing Park Snowworld Landgraaf, a barefoot park in Brunssum, the NATO command centre in Brunssum (which you cannot see from the inside obviously), cultural center Schunck"" in Heerlen, a mining museum in Heerlen and so much more.

If you want the good life, then go there!
It is a beautiful ancient (Roman) city with many shops, museums, monuments, old pubs, fine restaurants and pleasant riverside quays and this can all be discovered on foot!
Visit the City Park, the basilica "Onze Lieve Vrouwe" and "Sint Servaas", the Book store Dominicanen in a church(!); visit Fun Valley Maastricht; the vineyard Apostelhoeve; the Fort Sint Pieter, the caves of the Sint Pietersberg, the shipping company Stiphout, Sint Pieters hill, the Vrijthof (concert place of Andre Rieu, who was born in Maastricht), the Bonnefanten Museum, the new Lumiere Cinema and so on, and so on...

A touristic place with more cafes than shops and lots of overnight accommodation.
Valkenburg is the number one Christmas town of the Netherlands, with a underground Christmasn market!
It furthermore offers thermal baths in "Thermae 2000"; the Holland Casino; an cosy ancient towncentre; hotel-castle Chateau Sint Gerlach; fairy tale park Sprookjesbos; belowground cycling adventure tour in caves; a coal mine; an open air theatre, a theme Park "De Valkenier", underground tunnels and museums, cable car and tobogann run AGoGo.

Het "Heuvelland" (the hill country)

Here the creeks of Geul and Gulp, which have formed the landscape centuries ago, quietly make their way through the region. It is one the most beautiful areas of the Netherlands and has the title
"5 star landscape". It is the region of places like Gulpen, Margraten, Eys, Vijlen, Vaals, Slenaken, Epen. Attractions are the Waterpark Mosaqua in Gulpen, the Labyrinth Drielandenpunt Vaals, the Golf Course het Rijk van Margraten. In Margraten there is an American Cemetery and Memorial with 8.301 graves.

In Margraten you will find the American Cemetery and Memorial where 8300 American soldiers are burried.
