Our home

We love our house. The view from the groundfloor level (living quarters, open kitchen, fire place) is so beautiful: unobstructed view of a wide, city canal lined by old-fashioned lanterns. Green trees in the summer, frozen ice in the winter. The street is very quite (dead-end), except on warm summer days, when recreational boats pass through the canal and wave at us with glasses of white wines;-) Part of the atmosphere of the street comes from the many student houses, who have regular BBQ's at the canal side, and sometimes invite the surrounding neighbors. Our backyard has easy access with two open doors from the open kitchen/living quarters. Open kitchen has a stained glass roof. Outside: picknick table that sits 6, three comfortable low chairs and a chaise-longue with pillows. Pretty secluded for a city backyard. First floor has a master bedroom on the front side of the house, with a view on the canal. Small bedroom next door is our youngest daughter's room. Separate toilet. Bathroom with bath and separate shower. Double sink. Second bedroom which balcony overlooking yard, which is our daughter's room, but where we could put a double bed/air matrass. Second floor holds the third bedroom, with a Queen size bed (a small double bed), and a sink. Romantic feeling because of the wooden beams that make the roof construction. Second bathroom with toilet inside and shower (plus washing machine/dryer). Fourth bedroom is the study room, which has a view on the canal again, and a fold-out twin-size sofa (ikea).

Who we are

  1. We are Brigitte and Baris, a married couple with a daughter of 7 years old and a 5 year old girl, and a cat who decided he likes our neighbor's house better, so we don't see him anymore;-) We are both professionals (marine scientist and medical doctor) and enjoy travelling when able to get away. We have done three home exchanges, one in 2013 with a great family/house in Brittany, France, and one with an extraordinary british lady who owns a stunning finca in Mallorca (2015). We also did a weekend exchange with a dutch family in arnhem. We are tied to the Dutch school vacations, but we are also open for long (European) weekend (4 days) house exchanges.
If interested, we have a catamaran (F18 nacra) at the beach club in Wassenaar (20 min car ride away), and if you know how to sail, you are welcome to also use our boat. We also have 2 adult bikes you can use, a bike for a 7 year old, and a bike for a 5 year old.

Where is it?

Your neighbourhood

We live in the old city center of Leiden (120,000 habitants), which is one of the oldest cities of The Netherlands, and a lively student town nowadays. It is located on the Old Rhine, at a distance of 20 kilometers from The Hague (10 min by train) and some 40 kilometers from Amsterdam (30 min by train). The recreational area of the Kaag Lakes (Kagerplassen) lies just to the northeast of Leiden. The beach is 10 km away (45 min bike ride). The entire city of Leiden is dissected with canals, and it seems that every citizen has a floating "something". Our street and canal is the last one before the 'singel', which encloses the city center. Leiden is a very small town, so you can walk everywhere very easily. It looks very similar to Amsterdam, but a lot less touristic. The market on Wednesday and Saturdays is fenomenal. There are 3 cinemas, and plenty of nice restaurants.
